Meet Dr. Brook Choulet, M.D. | The Performance Psychiatrist®, Founder & CEO, Choulet Performance Psychiatry®

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Brook Choulet, M.D. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Brook, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My view of work and personal life has shifted significantly over the years. Early in my career, I focused heavily on building my practice and completing additional training, which often meant my work took priority. Over time, I realized that striving for perfect “balance” was creating more pressure, not less. That’s when I began to embrace work life integration instead.
Work life integration means blending personal and professional responsibilities in a way that aligns with your values, rather than trying to weigh them equally or keep them completely separate. I use this approach myself and encourage many of my patients to do the same, especially high performers who operate in demanding environments.
A simple example is how I approach vacations or travel. Many entrepreneurs dread taking time off because they fear returning to an overwhelming inbox. During a recent trip with my husband, I set aside a dedicated hour each afternoon to catch up on work. That small window allowed me to stay present during the day, fully enjoy the experience, and return to the office refreshed instead of overwhelmed. It is a rhythm that supports both my personal life and my practice.
Integration also shows up in smaller moments. I might take a call while walking outside to get movement and sunlight, or use a short break between sessions for a Pomodoro-style reset. It is not about doing everything at once. It is about intentional structure, protecting recovery, and adjusting as your needs change physically, emotionally, and professionally.
My life has changed in recent years as a mother and as my practice has expanded, and work life integration has helped me remain present in both roles. It is a dynamic process that requires ongoing reflection, but it has allowed me to build a career I love without sacrificing my well-being or the time I want with my family.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a sports and performance psychiatrist and the founder of Choulet Performance Psychiatry®, where I work with executives, athletes, entrepreneurs, and their families. I built the practice to fill a gap in mental health care for people who operate in high pressure environments and need individualized, high quality support.
One of the things that sets our work apart is the degree of personalization. High performers often struggle to find care that understands the demands of their roles. Our practice focuses on clarity, consistency, emotional regulation, and sustainable performance. I am proud of the specialized offerings we have developed, including The Executive Mind Health Assessment™, and of the opportunities I have had to contribute to the field through leadership roles, speaking engagements, and collaborative work with sports and performance organizations.
Getting to this point was not easy. I built my practice while completing my training, and many of my early decisions required a willingness to take risks and trust my vision for what performance psychiatry could be. What helped me navigate those challenges were the same principles I teach my patients: intentional structure, recovery, and work life integration.
What I want people to know about my brand is that it is rooted in personalized, evidence-based care. We meet each patient where they are, understand the pressures they face, and help them build a structure that supports both well-being and sustained success.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a close friend were visiting Scottsdale for a week, I would want them to experience the mix of rest, natural beauty, and great food that makes this area such a special place to live.
I always recommend starting with something restorative. One of my favorite places to unwind is the spa at The Phoenician. It is a peaceful space with beautiful desert views and a great way to reset before exploring the city.
Scottsdale also has an excellent restaurant scene. I enjoy trying new places and sharing great meals with family and friends. It is one of my favorite ways to connect and relax.
I also encourage people to take in the natural beauty of the Valley. Scottsdale has incredible sunrises and sunsets, and even a short walk outdoors can be grounding. Depending on the season, spending time by the pool at a local resort is another great way to enjoy the Arizona landscape.
What I love most about showing someone around Scottsdale is the balance it offers. You can spend the morning at a spa, enjoy a great dinner in the evening, and still find plenty of quiet moments to rest and recharge. It is a place that supports connection, recovery, and calm, and that is part of why I love calling it home.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am grateful for the people who shaped my path. I am a third generation psychiatrist, and growing up in a family where mental health care was both valued and modeled gave me a strong foundation for the work I do today. Their influence taught me the importance of compassion, excellence, and service, and it continues to guide my approach to patient care.
I want to acknowledge my team at Choulet Performance Psychiatry®. Their commitment to individualized, high quality care allows us to make a meaningful impact every day. I am grateful for the dedication and shared purpose that we bring to this work together.
I also want to recognize the mentors who supported me early in my training and encouraged me to think creatively about how psychiatric care could better serve high performers. Their guidance helped me build a practice that fills a real gap for executives, athletes, and their families.
