We had the good fortune of connecting with Dom Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dom, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
If I’m being honest, there wasn’t some perfectly planned transition into business.

It was more of a moment.
I had just come out of a position I was in, one I had built success in, but it came to an abrupt end. And in that moment, there wasn’t a long runway to think things through.

It was… now what?

And I remember sitting with that question.
I could go back into something familiar, something safe… or I could finally lean into the thing that had been pulling at me for a while.
So the thought process became very simple.
It’s either now… or never.

There wasn’t a backup plan.
There wasn’t a slow transition.
It was a decision. I went all in.
At the time, it probably didn’t look like the smartest move on paper. I had a family, I had responsibilities, and stepping into something uncertain like that comes with real weight.
But there was also clarity in it.
Because when you remove the option to go back, you start to move differently.

You get resourceful. You get focused.
You figure things out faster. And that’s what happened.
What started as a leap quickly turned into a pursuit.
Then into a craft. Then into a business.

And over time, that evolved into something much bigger than I originally imagined.

204 Film wasn’t built from a place of convenience.
It was built from a decision to bet on something I believed in, even when the outcome wasn’t guaranteed.
Looking back, that moment could have gone a lot of different ways.
But choosing to go all in forced me to grow into the person and the operator I needed to become.

And that’s really what started it all.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For me, the art didn’t start with business, it started with music.

Being in those environments, you learn quickly that it’s not about perfection, it’s about connection. You can feel when something lands and when it doesn’t. That was my first understanding of what it means to actually move people.

Film just became the next extension of that.

In the beginning, I was just capturing moments. Point, shoot, get the shot. But over time, I started to realize there was something deeper there. Because now it wasn’t just about making something look good, it was about the story. What’s being said, what’s not being said, and whether the person on the other side actually feels it.

That shift changed everything for me.

Because once you understand that people don’t connect with content, they connect with truth, you start approaching the work differently. You slow down. You become more intentional. You start thinking about how something is received, not just how it’s created.

And that naturally led into what we do now.

A lot of people can create content, but very few build systems around it. Making sure what’s created actually gets seen, gets used, and does something for the business. That’s what we’ve leaned into with 204 Film.

Getting to that point wasn’t easy.

There were seasons where I was learning everything from scratch, trying to understand how to make the camera match what I saw in my head. At the same time, I’m a husband, a father of three boys, trying to build something with no real roadmap, no network, no consistent flow of clients.

And life doesn’t slow down for you either. There were personal challenges, health, pressure, moments where stepping back into something more predictable would’ve made sense.

But I had already made the decision to go all in.

And once you do that, you don’t really have the luxury of waiting until everything feels right. You figure it out. You adjust. You grow into the person the work requires.

Along the way, a few things became very clear to me.

Consistency will always beat talent if talent isn’t consistent. Clarity matters more than creativity, because if people don’t understand you, they won’t choose you. And at the core of it all, this is service.

You’re helping someone be seen. You’re helping them build something. You’re helping them move forward.

So when people look at 204 Film now, they might see content, systems, structure…

But for me, it’s still rooted in the same idea.

Create something real. Make it matter. And make sure it actually works.

Because the goal was never just to create.

It was to build something that lasts.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Most people would probably expect me to say Scottsdale, and don’t get me wrong, Scottsdale has its place. Great food, great energy, a lot going on.

But if I’m being honest, if one of my close friends was coming into town and I wanted them to really experience something different… I’d take them a few hours north to Prescott.

That’s more my speed.

There’s something about Prescott that feels like a reset. It’s slower, quieter, a little more grounded. Cabins, open air, trees, space to actually breathe. It reminds me a lot of home growing up in Ohio, just that sense of being able to unplug and not feel like everything is moving a hundred miles an hour.

We’d probably split the week.

Start in the city, maybe a couple days around Phoenix and Scottsdale, hit a few solid food spots, enjoy the energy, let them see that side of Arizona.

Then we’d head up north.

Find a good cabin, sit outside in the morning with coffee, no rush, no real agenda. Maybe walk around downtown Prescott, grab a bite, talk, catch up, just be present.

That’s where the real conversations happen anyway.

And that’s usually what people remember the most.

Not the packed schedule, not the loud moments… but the space to actually enjoy where they are and who they’re with.

For me, that balance is everything.

A little bit of movement… and a little bit of stillness.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a few people I could point to, but if I’m being honest, it starts at home.

My parents deserve a lot of credit for who I am today.

Growing up, our house was never just ours. Through foster care, they opened our doors to over 85 kids, and at any given time we had around 13 kids living under one roof. It wasn’t always easy, it wasn’t always quiet, but it was full of life, full of different stories, and full of people who needed a place to feel safe.

Watching that as a kid… it does something to you.

It teaches you what service actually looks like.
Not when it’s convenient, but when it costs something.

It teaches you how to see people, how to meet them where they are, and how to show up consistently.

A lot of what I carry into my business today, the way we serve clients, the way we think about legacy, the standard we try to uphold, it all traces back to that environment.

I’d also give a lot of credit to the people who spoke life into me early on, even when I didn’t fully see it myself. Moments like being told I had a gift behind the camera, those things matter. They plant seeds that you don’t always recognize right away, but over time they grow into something real.

And then of course, my wife and my kids.

They’ve been there through every transition, every risk, every season where things weren’t fully figured out yet. That kind of support isn’t loud, but it’s foundational.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that no one really builds anything meaningful alone.

For me, it’s a combination of family, faith, and the people who believed in me before it all made sense.

They’re a big part of why 204 Film is what it is today.
