Meet Courtney Sotelo | Skintologist & CLT

We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Sotelo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I see risk as something that should be calculated rather than avoided. The biggest risks I’ve taken have been investing in myself and my business. Starting my spa meant leaving the security of a traditional job, investing my own money into equipment, continuing my education, and trusting that I could build something from the ground up.
Throughout my career, taking strategic risks has allowed me to grow. I’ve expanded my services, invested in advanced technology, and continued learning new treatments, even when there wasn’t a guarantee of immediate returns. Those decisions have helped me provide better results for my clients and differentiate my business in a competitive industry.
I’ve learned that growth rarely comes from staying comfortable. The key is doing your research, weighing the risks, and being willing to act when you believe in the long-term vision. Every calculated risk I’ve taken has made me a stronger business owner and has helped shape the spa I continue to build today.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Skintology Skin & Laser Spa was built on the belief that everyone deserves access to high-quality, affordable results-driven skincare in a welcoming, judgment-free environment. What sets us apart is our commitment to education just as much as treatment. I believe that real transformation happens both in the treatment room and at home, so every service is personalized with the goal of helping clients understand their skin and feel confident caring for it long after they leave.
My journey into entrepreneurship wasn’t the traditional path. Like many business owners, I started with a passion for helping people and quickly learned that running a business requires wearing many hats. Beyond being an esthetician and laser technician, I’ve had to become a marketer, accountant, customer service representative, and lifelong student. There have been moments of uncertainty, financial sacrifices, and plenty of trial and error, but every challenge has taught me something valuable.
What I’m most proud of is creating a space where clients feel genuinely cared for. Whether someone is struggling with acne, rosacea, aging concerns, or simply needs an hour to recharge, my goal is for them to leave feeling more confident than when they walked in. I strive to make advanced skincare and laser treatments effective, approachable, and affordable so clients can prioritize their skin as part of their regular wellness routine rather than seeing it as an occasional luxury.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that growth comes from never becoming complacent. I’m constantly investing in continuing education, new technology, and better ways to serve my clients because this industry is always evolving. I don’t believe there’s ever a point where you know it all, and that mindset has allowed both me and my business to continue growing.
More than anything, I want people to know that Skintology isn’t just about skincare—it’s about helping people feel comfortable in their own skin. When clients leave with greater confidence and the knowledge to maintain their results, that’s the true measure of success for me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to Arizona for a week, I’d make sure they experienced everything that makes this state so special—from adventure and incredible food to hidden gems and unforgettable sunsets.
We’d start the trip by floating the Salt River, one of my favorite Arizona traditions. There’s nothing better than spending the afternoon tubing down the river, spotting the wild horses along the banks, listening to music, and soaking up the desert scenery.
Another day would be all about exploring the Downtown Gilbert or Old Town Scottsdale, checking out local boutiques, rooftop bars, and some of Arizona’s best restaurants.
If it’s baseball season, we’d absolutely catch a Diamondbacks game at Chase Field. If football is in season, we’d be cheering on the Cardinals at State Farm Stadium. There’s always an electric atmosphere, and it’s a fun way to experience the local sports culture.
One of the highlights of the week would be a road trip to Sedona. We’d hike among the red rocks, explore Tlaquepaque Village, shop the local galleries, and finish the day watching the sunset paint the cliffs shades of red and orange. If we had another day, we’d continue north to the Grand Canyon because it’s one of those places that truly takes your breath away no matter how many times you’ve seen it.
Of course, I’d also have to show them my world, so we’d spend an afternoon at my spa for a relaxing facial before heading out for dinner. I think self-care should be part of every vacation.
What I love most about Arizona is the variety. In one week you can float a river, hike through the desert, catch a professional sporting event, explore world-famous red rocks, enjoy luxury resorts and incredible restaurants, and watch sunsets that never get old. It’s the perfect balance of adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable experiences—and it’s a place I’m always excited to share with people.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my husband, who owns a collision repair business. Watching him build and run a successful business has given me a firsthand look at the realities of entrepreneurship—the long hours, sacrifices, setbacks, and the rewards that come from perseverance. His work ethic and unwavering commitment have inspired me to build my own business with the same dedication and long-term mindset. He’s been a constant source of encouragement and has helped me believe that success comes from consistency, resilience, and never being afraid to invest in your vision.
I’d also like to recognize the instructors and mentors I’ve had throughout my esthetics and laser education. Every class, certification, and mentor has contributed to the knowledge and confidence I have today. Their willingness to share their expertise has helped shape the way I care for my clients and reinforced my commitment to continually learning and growing in this industry.
