We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Cooper and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelly, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
My business gives back to non profits fighting sex trafficking. We also empower girls around the world to live authentically.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m a US veteran turned fashion designer. I’ve combined my passions for giving back to others and filling a gap in the market after not finding sensibly-priced and uniquely designed clothes that I like. The result is Tomato Superstar, a line of clothing that not only helps girls feel more confident in being themselves but also gives back to an important cause. The biggest obstacle I have overcome is starting this business from the bottom up while parenting full time. It’s been an arduous task and it’s taken a long time but I’m making it happen! If you’re starting a new business my best advice is to be patient and learn from the many mistakes you will likely make. I also advise you to work with a mentor with a solid background in the fashion industry. Fashion design isn’t only about the artistic, fun side of designing clothes. There is an entire merchandising side to the business that will either make you or break you.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my bestie for a hike at Sabino Canyon and then take her to lunch at Saffron in Oro Valley. I just love their Indian food and the ambience is off the charts, I would also take my friend to Mt. Lemmon for a day trip and then Rocky Point for a couple of days to enjoy the beach. We would also hit La Encantada and 4th Avenue for food and shopping.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My daughter! She’s always supported me and inspired the brand from the beginning. She’s an amazing person and walks to the beat of her own drum.
