We had the good fortune of connecting with Felicia Munion and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Felicia, how do you think about risk?
Risk is an essential component for growth. There are different kinds of risk, and it is important as a business owner to understand how much uncertainty you are comfortable with. Rachel Botsman, one of my favorite thinkers on trust and uncertainty, explains that when you are faced with risk you can do one of two things: either decrease the amount of perceived risk, or increase your own tolerance for uncertainty. As I have grown in this business I have definitely increased my tolerance for uncertainty, but I have done it by creating structures in which I feel secure. When I have something stable and known to move forward from, it makes the uncertainty of risk and new opportunities more exciting and less daunting.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’ve been in the aesthetics field for almost 15 years now, but it wasn’t until a bad situation in 2014 that I jumped in full time to run a medical clinic. My husband’s company suddenly went bankrupt, and almost overnight we had to find a new office space, hire staff, and go full speed with our clinic. Then because of contraction in healthcare in Albuquerque, we decided in 2016 to move to Arizona and start Arizona Facial Plastics. We are in our 5th year, and are finally hitting our stride. My staff is amazing, and they truly care about all of our clients. We are about to see our 5000th client! I’ve learned that growth happens when you make decisions that align with your goals, rather than making decisions based on fear. You have to hire people who have positive energy, are growth-oriented, and who enjoy learning about different kinds of people. My passion is helping people become better versions of themselves by increasing self-awareness and interpersonal skills. Having a business with awesome employees and trusting clients lets me live my passion. What separates us is our love of education. We are always looking at new innovations in aesthetics, and bringing the best of those to our clients. We also want our clients to be educated, and we do our best to help them become active participants in the positive aging process.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would pick her up from the airport and take her to Glai Baan. It is the cutest little Thai Street Food restaurant on Osborn and 24th. The food is so delicious and unlike any other Thai food you’ll have. We would grab our bikes and I would take her up to the Sonoran Desert Preserve for some mountain biking at Apache Wash trailhead. The views and desert plants are incredible. We would visit the Phoenix Art Museum and I would take her to a show at the new outdoor theatre that the Phoenix Theater has created. We would probably also head up to Sedona to meditate at the Airport Vortex, and maybe ride some more. We would stay at Inn of the Rocks, and stroll at Tlaquepaque to check out some amazing art. When we got back to Phoenix, I might take her to Sumo Maya (post Covid, when they are open for dine-in again).
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank Nancy Rhodes, of A Furniture Affair. When I moved to Phoenix in 2016, she took me under her wing and introduced me to the most fabulous network of professional women. I joined three different Women Business Owner’s groups thanks to her, and the relationships and connections I’ve made through theme have propelled me forward in my journey as an entreprenuer.
