We had the good fortune of connecting with Candace Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Candace, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I like this question because this is one of the biggest lessons I’ve had to learn. When it comes to my career, I feel like you have to take risks in order to grow and learn. When you stay in your comfort zone too long and never try new things you become stagnant. Failures teach you and help you learn to improve. Regarding fashion specifically, I’ve had to learn to take risks when it comes to styling, to be confident and bold enough to share my ideas. I started to experiment with clothing and try outfits people might think are crazy, because it may turn out amazing! And if it doesn’t, that’s ok too! Like the saying goes, it’s better to take a risk and fail rather than doing nothing and wondering what it “could be”.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started in the fashion industry doing free photoshoot styling for experience. Then I was introduced to working backstage for fashion shows. After my first show, I had so much fun and felt so invigorated! I continued to work backstage at shows all around the country and it became my passion. I started CCarter Productions in 2018 and have been coordinating fashion shows, focused on creativity, bringing the creative community together to mastermind and network and showcasing new as well as experienced artists of all kinds. I’ve worked with several local and international brands, directing and coordinating campaigns, fashion shows, as well as wardrobe styling. Consistency, persistence , accepting constructive criticism and stepping out of my comfort zone have been some of the most important factors in aiding my success.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I like to take my friends to Sedona! it is so peaceful and beautiful and I love the energy there. I like to meditate and do self care and Sedona is perfect for that. We could go hiking near one of the vortexes then have breakfast at one of the local cafes, then maybe go on a jeep tour or a hot air ballon ride! They also have one of the top art galleries in the country (Exposures International) Its one of my favorite galleries! Back in Phoenix we could do something more chill, like go to Trapp Haus BBQ then go have a drink at one of the low-key downtown speakeasy’s. I love shopping at the Nordstrom at Scottsdale Fashion Square as well! I would definitely have dinner catered at home by Chef William at The Climax, some of the best food in the valley! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Im thankful for my mom, Letitia for being a fashionista and helping me obtain an interest in fashion at a young age. Also, for helping me and supporting me when I have a shoot or fashion show! Anyone who has assisted me on set, I appreciate you so much! My old FFM team helped me gain so many memorable fashion/friendship experiences that helped shape my career today. Last but not least, my friends and clients who have believed in me and supported me throughout my growth.
