We had the good fortune of connecting with Leticia Gutierrez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leticia, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
With any career or project, there will inevitably come a point where you’ll just want to throw in the towel and give up; but it’s important to keep in mind that these feelings are normal, and it is those that rise above them time and again that end up successful. Personally, I’ve had moments of self-doubt and frustration and I felt like maybe I chose the wrong path and became overwhelmed with it all. But with the support and encouragement of family, friends, and colleagues in the photography community I’ve been able to keep pushing through the highs and lows. I often hear that photographers are driven by passion, and although this was a motivator for me in the beginning, I say forget about passion itself and just be driven. Passion is what helps me become a photographer and create beautiful images – but it’s the drive and determination that will continue to propel me forward as a business owner and carry me over the hurdles ahead. I try to focus on putting ‘passion’ into my images, but I put the ‘drive’ into my daily pursuit. My advice is to savor the small victories, embrace uncertainty, and continue to challenge yourself.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to give a shoutout to a couple people; primarily my husband Juan Angel, for his continued support and encouragement. Secondly, my friend and colleague Don Shader for his mentorship.
