Meet Robert Gonzales | Director of Photography

We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Gonzales and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Robert, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to pursue my artistic abilities as a career solely because being enveloped in photography makes me incredibly happy, from the process of taking the photo to all the time it takes to edit. There’s something magical about being able to capture a candid moment of life before it’s gone, that’s the real drive behind my process of photography and what I bring to the table for every piece of work I produce.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
By day, I’m the Director of Photography for a local company out of Tempe called “Oats OverNight”! Everyone at this wonderful company loves working together and inspiring one another to be the best versions of themselves and helps one another grow! I’m in charge of capturing all the behind the scenes photos, candid shots of the product and crew and everything in between, along with editing and collaborative work amongst the rest of the media team! When I’m not at work, I’m an avid street photographer who specializes in candid photography, food photography and model photography.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d like to first show them all around the valley over the first few days, hang out at a couple local bars, visit a few restaurants I enjoy and grab some photographs along the way. Later on in the week I’d take my friends up to northern Arizona to explore the diverse scenery Arizona has to offer, especially Prescott and Sedona for example!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly, there’s a few people to thank for believing in me and pushing me towards my passion. I’d like to thank my old chef Brett Gardenia for always pushing me to be creative and letting me leave the restaurant industry to pursue my dream of being a photographer. Next up is a fellow photographer, David Craft. He motivated me to get a real camera and begin the whole creative process on something more than just my iPhone. Last, I’d like to thank my Creative Director Paul Germaine. He’s been mentoring me ever since I got into the Director of Photography position and has been nothing but supportive and helpful while also keeping me motivated to continue doing my best work possible.
