We had the good fortune of connecting with Josiah Whitesinger and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josiah, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
i wanted to put my artistic talent out there and just show my creative side. This wasn’t my first option, i wanted to pursue many different hobbies as well and well i didn’t get much support from others. But i had already got my associates degree in studio arts. So i just kept creating and practicing my craft over and over. Just after almost a year, i finally felt more confident in my style and knew what i wanted to make and put out there into the world. So i guess you could my whole artistic career just grew over time, but the main point to my story is if you have a vision or dream pursue it, you can do anything in this world if you put in the time and effort in it. You can manifest anything into your life, just got to keep pushing through all the challenges and doubts you get.
I still have struggles and challenges when making my art, but I just always remember who i’m doing this for. I do this for myself and my family, my people, my community, and my culture.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My brand is mostly just an indigenous art business. I practice my craft with sketches, but i sell my art work through commissions or just selling my stickers and prints. My style is more of a surrealism/realistic but i do like to try new styles. I feel like my type of art style has a big effect on how people see or view my art. Most of time i don’t get good comments back or it looks “scary” and i get overlooked a lot. At the beginning i got very discouraged, but over time i just kept doing it and eventually i got more attention and more and more people were very inspired by me. But like i said if you have a vision or dream keep manifesting it into your life, don’t let other dictate your life. It may not be the best at the beginning but it will be all worth it at the end.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my friends all around phoenix, just because i know they are here just for a week. Gilbert area, Tempe, scottsdale, and chandler mostly. Take them to local galleries, local restaurants, and different museums. But even just going for a walk or skating to the park sounds fun.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I appreciate all my family that supports my career choices, and all my friends and supporters on instagram that buy my art. It’s a long process for sure, but my craft is only getting better from here. I got big plans for this new year, just got to be patient and keep making more paintings and drawings
