Meet Marcus Watson | Owner of 57Fit

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcus Watson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marcus, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to teach people about sustainability and the long term benefits of exercise. Too often overall health and wellness is convoluted and difficult to understand. The fitness industry promotes quick fixes, 30 day challenges, teas and waist trainers, before coaching sustainable health.

What should our readers know about your business?
The business started in 2014. I chose the name 57FIT as this was year my mother was born. She passed in 2005 and I wanted to honor her, so what better way than to build something she could be proud of. I think what sets 57Fit apart is our commitment to community, education, diversity, and really showcasing people of all ages and abilities. We teach basic movements that transfer to our real world physical activities. We have created a culture of no-body shaming, no discrimination and a safe space where everyone can feel comfortable without judgement. This hasn’t been a easy process. This field of personal training is interesting. It’s unregulated so anyone can become a personal trainer, create a social media page, and offer services. The problem with this is it paints a negative perception of the ones who have knowledge, education, and a thorough understanding of how to coach. You have to build a brand and provide something that sets you apart in an already overflooded profession. I’ve learned to provide your WHY when personal training. Why do you do it? Why you and not another trainer. I think it’s important to remember people can workout anywhere. They come for the training and stay for the personal in my opinion. Always look to build community. The support will carry your brand and reputation. The brand 57Fit aims to support you on your fitness journey whenever you start. It’s never too late.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s honestly been so long since we’ve been able to check out a lot of places I’m sure I don’t know anymore!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There have been a number of people who have been so supportive throughout this process, I wish I could list them all. I would have to say my wife, Melissa Taylor(owner of Minneapolis Beauty Lounge). She has been paramount in the growth of the brand with her tireless support, knowledge, and determination.
