We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaylin Gaston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaylin, what is the most important factor behind your success?
God, my wife/family, and just being myself. Most of the success that I have experienced with owning a clothing brand has come from making those personal connections with people. Being genuine, building rapport, and making sure that everything I put out or create has the best quality. I pride myself on making sure every garment, every order, or anything that I touch is the best that it can be. All the way down to the small details, I try to make sure my actions are intentional and some type of meaning is displayed through the final piece of work. I think it’s important to hold yourself to a high standard in anything you do in life and make sure you have people behind you that support you 100% no matter what it is that you might be doing. In all my creative ventures I just try to keep god first in everything I do and let the rest just fall in place.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Aside from making custom clothing and 1 of 1 garments, I also write/produce/create music. With having multiple avenues to express my creative side, it has allowed me to hone in on the skills and talents that really make me different and unique in all facets of my life. Being able to take minimal ideas from another person, mix it with some of my wildest placements and schemes that are out of the ordinary, then bringing it to reality is the best part about doing what I do. Trying to create something “original” and unexpected every time are the two keys that separate me from others in my field. The thing that I am most proud about regarding my brand is that I created something with meaning, and it isn’t just another company putting out stuff just for people to buy. I am the sole owner, creator, and worker under my brand so everyday I am thinking of ways to make sure my brand will stand the test of time. Iv’e had the opportunity to shadow and learn first hand from Owners of other small businesses, take classes in college that highlighted important lessons within my field, and even network with other entrepreneurs to gauge different angles on making a business successful. All these things have pushed me to the place I am now professionally and it was far from easy. Iv’e invested a lot of time, money, and energy to keep it all a float, but I won’t ever let myself accept failure or stop chasing greatness. Everything won’t always go as planned on your journey, but it’s about how you respond to those changes that will dictate how far you go. Even if everybody in the world never owns a garment from PUMP VIII or never gets something created by Jay Gas personally, I know that all the people I’ve had the opportunity to work with already have gained a piece of art that was made with nothing but love and its something they’ll remember forever. Lastly, I think when you hear PUMP VIII or Jay Gas, just know that whatever was attached to those names was real, genuine, and intended only to be positive and uplifting in manner and never to tear down anyone else and their journey.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First I think we’d go grab some breakfast down at “Scramble (a breakfast joint)” in Phoenix then go biking through Tempe/ Scottsdale so they can see what type of energy Arizona has to offer. While biking, we’d probably stop at my alma mater ASU, so they can experience the campus themselves. Then we’d probably go to Hurricane Harbor because 9 times out of 10 it’s going to be hot outside and the water park is always a fun place to cool off at. For lunch, it has to be “AZ Taco King” and I’d order them the Birriadilla because its fire and they’ll actually get full. Another must throughout the day or during their stay is going to a Suns or Cardinals game, the atmosphere at a professional sports game is always ecstatic. If they stay through Sunday morning then I’ll invite them to my church Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. If all else fails then I’ll take them to Tempe Town Lake and we’ll reserve a pedal boat or Electric Pontoon for a couple of hours and relax on the water.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Mom Dukes, My brother, My wife, and my entire family. They have been my number 1 supporters from day 1, and still push me to go harder and get better each day. They all have been very instrumental in helping me get to the place I am now with not only my brand but just my development as a young man. As cliche as it may sound, I wouldn’t have any of these successes and accomplishments without them being there every step of the way. Wouldn’t trade any of them for the word, and if I don’t say it enough, THANK Y’ALL for everything. It is truly appreciated.
