We had the good fortune of connecting with Mayela Vazquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mayela, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Being consistent, having short and long term goals and an open mind to be constantly out of my comfort zone. Training my mind to think positive and not negative. Keep evolving and learning, never take things for granted and appreciating the people/opportunities I have.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. -I moved to New York 10 years ago from Mexico without a job or connections. That has made me be a risk taker and a go getter, New York is very competitive and it has trained me somehow to keep the focus and make things happen.

How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy?

– Its been a really intense journey, specially leaving my friends/ family back in Mexico and coming to a new country to build a life from scratch. Looking back, I dont know how I did it but I think that loving what I do and being passionate about that has been key to keep going. Good things take time and even though there where many times where I felt like giving up, I continue to knock new doors, to believe in the life that I wanted to create for myself and after working for a couple of years every single day, things started to work out.

How did you overcome the challenges?

– Being grateful of every opportunity. Remembering that the bad days don’t define the rest of the month, that the hard times are good to make a stronger/better version of yourself and that there is no other way but to keep going forward even when fear is around.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

– Find what you love, dream big, so big that it scares you and go get that dream with all you’ve got. Put action everyday to the equation, because dreaming without an action is not enough. Surround yourself with people who believe in you.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
– MORNING: Wake up and go for a walk + coffee with fofo (my dog) around the Williamsburg Pier. We will have the city and bridge view while having a good conversation and catch up. – LUNCH TIME: I love having brunch at Chez Ma Tante in Greenpoint. They have the best pancakes, food we can share and get some drinks.

– Walk around Williamsburg vintage shops and stores. Then grab the ferry to Dumbo to watch the sunset also with a very special view

– I would pick a restaurant that has live jazz either in the city or Brooklyn for dinner and then head to rooftop bar for drinks after.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family has been my biggest motivation throughout my career, they have believed in me and my goals, even when things haven’t been great, they keep reminding me to dream BIG and to never settle for anything that doesn’t feel good or makes me happy. My friends in News York, who have supported me to high and lows and encourage me to keep looking for bigger and better opportunities. They have also open doors for me in a country where I didn’t know anyone. I believe that the people you surround yourself is key to succeed, to keep a positive mindset and to keep going for more. A book that I also love is “The Universe has your back” from Gabby Bernstein which has showed me to trust the process and train your mind to focus on the things you have to work on and let go of what you don’t have control of, to find a balance in your life.
