We had the good fortune of connecting with Maegan Blau and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maegan, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
We are bringing traditional interior design practices to those living with disabilities. In the past adaptive design has been associated with hospital – like decor style and has overlooked the style of the individual. Our design studio combines beauty and function to elevate and empower the lives of our clients. We believe great design should be accessible to everyone and focus on finding creative ways to make spaces work for the whole family while upholding personal style.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We are an interior design studio first which by nature makes us artists. I always say interior design is a 50/50 blend of business and art and there are many hats to be worn in this industry. Some days need more business tending but we must always remember to fuel our creativity and continue to be inspired. To do that we encourage our employees to take time off, travel, go to vintage stores, spend time outside, do what they love. Our art is the focus of our business and without it we have nothing.

Building a business is never easy but one thing I have learned is consistency is the most important component. The to-do list is never ending and not everything gets done on a daily basis but over time building consistency in your processes, schedule, and interactions has paid off.

What we want the world to know is that when everyone has full access to a space, it only elevates everyone. Adaptive design is the highest level of inclusion. There have been so many excuses to why a building or space can not be made accessible to those living with disabilities and frankly we need to move beyond those excuses. We hope to eliminate those excuses and prove that accessible design is interior design and there are no exceptions for creating beautiful, functional spaces that everyone can participate in.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Arizona is my home and I am always happy to show it off. We have a great variety of resorts and rental homes honestly you cant go wrong either way, just make sure there is a good pool! Some of my favorite restaurants around the valley are Toca Madera for a date night, Culinary Dropout for drinks, Olive and Ivy for brunch, and Cibo for some great pizzas.

My husband and I have been enjoying going to comedy shows at Stand Up Live in downtown Phoenix or finding new art installations like the Van Gogh exhibit in Old Town Scottsdale. I also recommend spending a day driving around Cave Creek, going to the biker bars and shopping for western antiques. We also love walking around the Desert Botanical Gardens for some beautiful wheelchair accessible paths.

Lastly, Sedona makes the perfect mini trip, hiking the red rocks and hoping to get a table at Elote Cafe or Mariposa, my favorites!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to say thank you to my husband Chris and cousin Korey for supporting the greater vision. They have been incredibly supportive with their time, energy and knowledge and made the growth of the company possible.
