“Everything you can imagine is real.” – Pablo Picasso We love this quote because what it’s saying is that anything is possible with an open mind. When you allow your mind to be free of restrictions, barriers, and rules, creativity flourishes and the possibilities are endless. In our world of creative and bold marketing, advertising, and PR campaigns, this is how those crazy stunts that brands pull are born. We have a rule at our creative agency that there are no bad ideas in brainstorming because we want to hear our team’s wildest, weirdest and wackiest ideas. My working motto is “Being Peace.” It’s the title of a book by Thich Nhat Hanh, and it’s become an instrumental idea in the way that I approach both my stories as a photographer and life in general. While I’ve spent a lot of time recently working in traditionally “peaceful” environments, doing nature photography in Alaska, I also cover a lot of pretty hectic and sometimes dangerous events, like my work covering the Black Lives Matter protests in Phoenix. A quote I’m really fond of is “so it goes” by Kurt Vonnegut from the novel “Slaughterhouse-Five”. It has a similar meaning to “c’est la vie” or “that’s life” and serves as a reminder to not take myself too seriously, mainly on things I do not have control over. Instead, it helps me focus on what I truly want out of life, what brings me happiness, and what to let go of. Ultimately, it motivates me to try new things because if it works out– cool; if it doesn’t, it’s a lesson learned. So it goes.
