We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Steele and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Being creative brings me so much happiness. Everything from drawing to playing piano to crafting brings me joy. One of the main reasons that I decided to start pursuing photography as a career was because of how happy it makes me. I love the process of seeing something beautiful, capturing it with my camera, and then editing it to look exactly how I picture it in my head. That is also why I love photographing couples and engagements. There’s something so special about capturing others’ happiness and love. That’s what gets me out of bed every day!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am so proud and lucky to have had the opportunity to explore photography in so many different ways over the past year. Photography has always been a passion of mine, but it wasn’t until last year that I screwed up the courage to go professional. This seemingly small step opened up a whole new world of possibility for me, and gave me the chance to learn so much about so many different types of photography. For example, although I set out to do wedding photography I learned that I also LOVE to take photos of people with their pets. I also discovered a passion for nature photography, which I’m growing into it’s own little side business on Etsy with notecards and jewelry. It’s been so much fun learning more about myself and my photography over the past year, although starting a business comes with its own challenges. Learning about taxes, LLCs, how to invoice… those are the less enjoyable (but still VERY necessary) parts to what I do. But if that’s the price I pay to do something I love everyday? It’s absolutely worth it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I travel quite a bit for photography, but Phoenix will always have a special place in my heart. My absolute favorite thing to do in the city is go to the Phoenix Botanical Gardens! It’s so beautiful there (great for photos!) and you can learn so much about cacti and the Sonoran Desert! Plus I’m always a sucker for a good gift shop.

One of my favorite food spots is Clever Ramen — honestly, all of the restaurants by the two guys behind Clever Ramen are great, but I can never say no to a good ramen spot. This place also has GREAT kimchi fries!

There are also so many great hiking spots around the Phoenix area — you can’t go wrong with a bit of a workout and some great scenery!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh my goodness, I wouldn’t be where I am today without the love and support of my amazing family and friends. My fiancé, Wally, provides the constant support I need to help me realize my dreams. He’s always there to say “you can do it” when I’m at my lows. My mom, dad, and sister are also amazing cheerleaders. They know that I can do whatever I put my mind to – even when I don’t believe that myself. I also have amazing friends who are completely dedicated to supporting my new business, whatever it takes.
