We had the good fortune of connecting with Mathew Molyneux and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mathew, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had a pretty interesting jump into self-employment and entrepreneurship. I was working with an agency doing photo and video work and to say I was happy with where I worked would be an understatement. The people in the company were great; I was able to build many great relationships with them. My boss was a very understanding and motivating person who allowed me to grow and learn in my space. The clients were fantastic to work with. Even the office space was somewhere that just made me want to come into work. As a creative I could never create enough stuff, so while working there I took on a few outside clients who only needed videos or photos; small things like weddings, promotional videos, or freelance crew needs. Things were going pretty great. Unfortunately, Covid put a damper on that. Because the need for photos and videos sharply declined,  my boss and I decided to change our working relationship slightly. I decided I wanted to grow what I was creating outside of work to a more full time occupation. This meant starting my own production company. Our relationship evolved to a contractual arrangement where his company would have photo video needs for his clients, and I would fulfill those needs. I began growing, taking on more clients alongside the ones I had and the work from the agency.

This transformation was where I really found what drives me. I want to serve clients and help bring their stories to life. Think about how many businesses, couples, charities, organizations, and bands, to name a few, there are out there. There are so many great stories that just have not found the right storyteller to help get them out into the world and be heard. I want to be that storyteller that helps these clients tell their stories to the world. This realization or revelation on what propels me forward is still motivating me and is the reason I started and continue to run my own business. I never want to forget the reason I started and why I’m here, which is why I encapsulated it in the tagline “We tell stories”.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Row Media is all about stories. That’s what I am about, that is what the business is about. I’m asking myself on a day-to-day basis, how do we tell this story? I think it’s quite easy to, and a fair few people tend to do this, go for what’s flashy without trying to really serve their clients and find out what they need. If you are responsible for telling their story you should be analyzing the hows and whys so that you can make decisions that serve the story. I believe the reason I have been able to get traction at all was because of the integrity to the story that I strive for when creating for clients. Sometimes it can be challenging but when you stay focused on the story and dedicate yourself to making decisions that serve the story, you won’t be steered astray. I am super proud to deliver the content I do. Integrity is a big driver for me and is a lesson I learned at my prior job but have carried with me and cherished since. Integrity and service just lead you down the right path, there isn’t much else to say about it. All of this is what I want the world to know about The Row Media; we are here to serve, we are here with integrity, and we tell stories.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I think some of the obvious choices would be to go up north, Sedona, Flagstaff, The Grand Canyon. I also wouldn’t discount seeing city life in downtown Phoenix or in Old Town Scottsdale. The Humble Bistro on High Street is a great place to grab some food; and High Street in general is full of great photo opportunities. Plenty of nature trails to choose from. Lake Pleasant is great for some lake day activities. There’s just so much to do!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Of course! I would not be where I am at today without the support of the people around me. My friend and colleague Tommy with Edify Media motivates me on a daily basis as we both share the same passion. The same goes for another guy, Stephen, who reminds me to stay humble and know my worth. Spencer with Grace PHX is another great friend and entrepreneur I look up to greatly who is constantly helping me work through creative business concepts and decisions. My old Boss Ryan is clearly someone I wouldn’t be able to be where I am today without. My family supports me constantly. There are just so many people around me that have played such a large role, I feel horrible but it is impossible to get everyone. So thank you to all of ya!
