We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Sainvilus and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Self-Care Satdai is a brand that focuses on reminding everyone to practice self-care every Saturday. Satdai is short for Saturday. On Saturdays, many people spend time catching up on sleep, completing unfinished work and spending time with family and friends. In most cases, people forget about intentionally spending time with themselves. Satdai’s slogan ‘Put Yourself First’ quickly reminds everyone to carve special time out for just themselves every Satdai no matter what is happening in their daily lives.

Ultimately, the goal is to help reduce the stigma around mental health by intentionally caring and loving on ourselves. Self-care is part of maintaining a healthy mind and looks different for everyone. However, the most common ways to practice self-care include healthy eating, impeccable hygiene, spa days, immersing in music or films, physical activity, exploring nature, creating a clean environment at home, drinking soothing beverages, going on a solo date, taking pictures or videos that help boost self-confidence. All self-care activities can be done while showcasing a Satdai product that has uplifting affirmations embedded in its very core. Satdai products include t-shirts, mugs, cups, plates, bottles, bags, hats, hoodies, and most importantly, the Razor Blade shades. We also take small and bulk orders with custom designs.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of the biggest lessons that I have learned throughout my career as an entrepreneur and a professional is that consistency is key. As an entrepreneur, my day is full of tasks from dawn until dusk. Being consistent in my approach to marketing, production, quality and time management makes the world of a difference. Oftentimes, it is common for an entrepreneur to lose motivation due to the overwhelming amount of work and time it takes to build a successful business. Most entrepreneurs serve the role of accountant, IT support technician, financial analyst, sales representative, manager, and the list goes on and on. When motivation is low, discipline takes over and keeps us on track. Without discipline, it is almost impossible to remain consistent.

I was raised by entrepreneurs and witnessed the challenges associated with it, firsthand. My parents were able to overcome the entrepreneurial challenges by delegating when necessary, efficiently prioritizing, and setting mini-deadlines to keep track of the tasks every step of the way. I have adopted the same approach when facing these challenges. While being a one-man team is commendable, knowing when to ask for help is just as important.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Phoenix is a beautiful city with tall prickly cacti, overwhelmingly beautiful sunsets, and almost year-round sunshine! In one week starting on Sunday, I would recommend grabbing brunch and a flight of mimosas at “The Lola”. After brunch, take a nice walk around the Westgate plaza to explore the shops and snap a few trendy photos by the beautiful fountain. On Monday, check out “Sadie’s Beach” for a cool swim and breathtaking mountain views during golden hour. Be sure to bring swimming shoes to protect your feet. Tuesday is the weekly national taco day. Head to “Just Tacos and More” to try a wide variety of tacos. I strongly recommend the birria taco. On Wednesday, “The Lounge” offers a night full of urban karaoke and games. Don’t miss out! The best time to start a hike is during the cool hours of the morning. So wake up early on Thursday and take a short drive to the “Usery Mountain Regional Park” to hangout with the cacti, hike, ride a bike or ATV through endless well-maintained dirt-roads. Make sure to reach the mountain top to see the huge Phoenix air marker sign. On Friday, “Alibaba Hookah Lounge” is the best spot in the city! Try one of their tasty hookah flavors and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the lounge. On Saturday or Satdai, I recommend a freestyle day where you get to do your favorite self-care activity to regroup. Finally, a short night drive to the “Tempe Town Lake Bridge” on any day of the week would be simply unforgettable.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mentors include Sherise Gumbs, Dr. Delvena Thomas, Margarette Lafleur and Michel Sainvilus. Sherise is a serial entrepreneur with over 5 businesses. Dr. Delvena runs a mental health practice, DRT Behavioral Services, and fights the stigma against mental health through many platforms. Margarette and Michel, my parents, were entrepreneurs throughout all of their lives. They have all impacted my business in positive and memorable ways.
