We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Jauregui, MSW, LCSW and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denise, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in a small AZ border town with a predominantly Spanish-Speaking population. I am the oldest daughter of Mexican parents; I consider myself a first-generation Latina in the U.S.; undeniably, Mexican-American. My native language is Spanish. Growing up, I learned speak Spanish at home, English at school, and Spanglish with friends. I was raised by parents who did not speak the language that I was learning at school nor understood the system or culture of the country I went to school in. This brought a set of challenges that unites those whose parents are immigrants to this country. This is a narrative of an individual raised by two completely different worlds, taught a set of norms and values at home and sometimes conflicting ones outside of home. Who I am today is a result of acknowledging, differentiating, blending to define my own values and own my sense of self; the way I show up in the world. Who I am today allows me to advocate and empower communities similar to the community I grew up in, with the goal of helping one another rise by claiming their identify, owning their values, and to proudly stand up for what they believe in.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The path to starting my own business has been a true challenge, but my passion to follow the company’s mission has been the biggest driving factor in creating that path for Cultivando Wellness. At Cultivando Wellness, we educate, connect, and empower the Latina/o/e community through mental health services, community outreach, and education. The biggest lesson I have learned is that it is okay to ask for help, but most importantly, that people actually want to help. A lot of the things I have learned throughout this process have come from successful people whom I personally have reached out to with questions about their experiences on their road to where they are today. I am immensely grateful for those who have been willing to share a bit of their wisdom with me, especially those whom I had never met before. At Cultivando Wellness, we strive to give people the tools to become their own advocates in similar ways.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite places to recommend are those that offer coffee or tea. I would start with Gold Bar Espresso, Copper Star Coffee, Fair Trade Cafe, and Tres Leches Cafe. I would highly recommend visiting Palabras Bookstore, Barrio Cafe, and Cha Cha’s Tea Lounge, not to mention they are women-owned! I would also recommend checking out the different art districts and hiking spots that Phoenix has to offer.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to use this shoutout to thank every person who has been a support throughout this journey. I appreciate every single person that has planted their seed in guiding this path for me. My biggest shout out will always go to my family. Gracias a mis padres who immigrated to this country to provide better opportunities for our family, my sisters who are my biggest cheerleaders, and my husband who has stood by my side throughout this journey. I cannot forget to mention the Latinx Therapist group whom I am fortunate to be a part of. Gracias Linda for creating a space where we can come together and empower one another to better serve our community!
