We had the good fortune of connecting with Miguel Vasquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Miguel, how does your business help the community?
I believe that as a Life and Health Insurance Agent I have the important job of helping people prepare for unexpected circumstances. As an insurance agent, I get to guide my clients’ decisions on what insurance policy plans best suit their specific needs. The research I do and recommendations I provide have a real impact on a client’s financial well-being down the road. I help people prepare for the future.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Since I was a young boy growing up in Phoenix, AZ I always had aspirations of doing some big in life. Later on in life I realized that the biggest thing you can do is to do for others. I can remember ever since I was little, I had a motivation or drive inside to try to make something happen to improve my situation. I felt that I could my family if I could find a way to contribute financially. I remember asking a neighborhood ice cream street vendor also known as a “paletero” if I could help sell candy and ice cream with him out of his ice cream truck in the afternoons for a small amount of pay. Anything at that time would help. In high school I remember packing a tiny suitcase about the size of a lunch box with an assortment of Mexican candy and a soda or two if I could fit it so that I could sell and make money at school. After high school I took my first hack at entrepreneurship, and I went to school to become a licensed Massage Therapist. I shortly then after found out it wasn’t really for me. I was able to get a job in insurance sales where I would then start my insurance career. To me, it was insurance, business and life training altogether. I learned that there was a whole world of possibilities out there and that I was only beginning to scratch the surface. I knew that there were much bigger things to come…

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
You don’t have to go far to have fun in AZ. We could do it all in one day but why not take a whole week ;). We could start up at the Grand Canyon and take the scenic rim to rim trail down to the bottom. The views are simply breathtaking. Hidden near the base is a stunning waterfall known as Ribbon Falls. On the way back down south, we have to make a stop at Sedona for the red rocks and pizza. While back in the Phoenix area you have to go to Lake Pleasant for paddle boarding and pretty much any other lake activity you can think of. We would have to definitely catch a Suns game and eat Sonoran hot dogs from street vendors. You can’t go without making a visit up to South Mountain to see the entire city of Phoenix and catching one of our famous Arizona sunsets. Of course we can go a little further down south in Tucson and visit Saguaro National Park for the beautiful cactus and also see the oldest European structure in the U.S., Mission San Xavier del Bac. And while we’re down there, why not just cheat and pay a visit to our very well-kept secret, Rocky Point, MX. But that’s a whole other story…

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I place God first in all that I do. My story could also not be told without the incredible woman whom I am blessed to call Mom, Alma Diaz. My Mother is a beautiful, caring, spiritual woman with a smile that can light up a room. She is the woman who took charge and never quit on us. She is the woman who taught my siblings and I the importance of unity, humility and compassion. Through her actions as a single mother, she taught us true strength and perseverance. Thanks to her I have seen a living example of self-sacrifice for others. She came from humble beginnings in Michoacan, Mexico to the U.S. and I am here to show her that the legacy is only beginning, and her hard work was not in vain. This is dedicated to you, Mama.
