Meet Steven Holliday | Illustrator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Holliday and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Steven, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to draw ever since I was a kid. I still have many of my originals from my childhood. I always knew I wanted to make art a career. I worked in a warehouse for 7 years often time arriving hours before open in order to leave early to be able to draw in the evenings. Once I got laid off in 2018 I decided to go full throttle with my desires to be an independent artist.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My family use to vacation in a small town called Alpena, Michigan when I was a kid. There was a small video rental store inside a gas station not far from the cottage. We would often rent movies there to watch at night and I was always fixated on the horror section of the store. The old VHS cover art scared and intrigued me so I spent many years renting horror movies.
That was where the interest in horror started. I always liked drawing monsters and creatures growing up and knew that one day I would love to turn this into a career. I was always fascinated with the characters from the horror genre and wanted to bring my spin to them in my own way. A lot of challenges came from figuring out exactly how to brand myself. Figuring out photoshop on my own was a challenge and I am still learning new things everyday. Another was how to create products. I use to print my own shirts and did everything from designing the design to separating the colors and preparing the screens and printing everything myself. These days I work with a lot of different people to bring my work to life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Where I live in Indianapolis there are a lot of places to go and things to do. Usually I take people to Broad Ripple to try different restaurants as well as Carmel and the downtown area. Fountain square is also a place to take people to window shop and try new places to eat.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A big shout out to those who have purchased my work. Those who continue to support or those you have bought once, it all means the world to me.
