We had the good fortune of connecting with Cam McSain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cam, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Since Covid I’ve gained more of an appreciation for “the little things.” Taking moments throughout my normal work day made me appreciative for the opportunity to work from home & be around my family. Entwining passions & hobbies into your life, and figuring out a way to create a living out of them should be something everyone considers early on in their careers. I used to think making a large salary was a way to happiness, but embracing something & working hard to make it provide a sustainable lifestyle for you & your family now is my focus.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
A lot of outdoor groups only focus on the highlights – the huge set of antlers for your wall, the rare species of waterfowl to hang from the ceiling, the tournament-winning fish, etc. What is different about Upstate Downers is not every person was raised outdoors or have a deep family history of that lifestyle. Yes plenty do, but other are first-generation conservationists. This dichotomy adds a unique layer to us. Also, we are not always about the trophy animals. Sometimes putting a small meal on your own table takes much more work and dedication. The saying “God gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason” I think enabled me to get where I am today. If people listen more than they talk, and take everyone’s opinion into account (regardless of if you agree or disagree) then you can learn much more about a person or activity, and about ways to achieve your intended results.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If it were in the summer time, we’d probably start at Irondequoit Bay. It’s close to my house, has a lot to offer, and is where I spent my childhood riding jet skis. Bill Gray’s for “The World’s Best Cheeseburger” would be a lunch spot, before heading to the Genesee Brewery. The next day we could hit any of the 11 Finger Lakes – take your pick. They all offer wineries, breweries, great fishing, and great camping ground with beautiful views. Could easily spend a few days in that area. If this trip were to be in the winter time, it would be the same food spots, but probably replace boating on Irondequoit Bay with ice fishing on Sodus Bay, and instead of driving down to The Finger Lakes, we’d take a snowmobile! Plenty of skiing & snowboarding opportunities along the way as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A few very close friends were main proponents for exposing me to the outdoors. Some were raised that way, others weren’t. But they all showed me what it means & what it takes to embrace The Great Outdoors. My in-laws were huge catalysts in getting me equipped & capable of living a lifestyle heavily driven by Mother Nature. These two groups allowed me actually go do it!
