Meet Elizabeth Zulema | Ceramic Artist | EZ Muddy

We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Zulema and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elizabeth Zulema, what are you inspired by?
I am inspired by color. I’m drawn to all the colors of my Mexican heritage and to the colors of the Tucson sunsets. Mix-matching and experimenting with different shades of colors excites me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My biggest professional challenge was transitioning away from science and into art. At this point in my life I imagined I would be finishing up medical school and working long hours as a doctor. It took a ton of self reflection and courage to admit that it was time for a change. I sometimes wonder if I’ve made the right decision but when I’m serenely working at my pottery wheel I know it was the right move. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to trust myself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Tucson is full of hidden local gems. In the day we would appreciate the beautiful Sonoran desert by walking up Sabino Canyon in the rainy season or enjoying a snow day in Mt Lemon. We would have Sonoran hotdogs from BK Tacos, of course. We would spend a day outdoors at The Annex to enjoy the shops, drinks at Westbound and Japanese food from Kukai. Thursday evening would be spent at Zemams Too for some Ethiopian food and DJ Herm’s dance party. We would definitely walk around 4th avenue and downtown to visit some of my favorite local spots like The Neon Door, Chingona Arizona, Hotel Congress and The Annabelle. The list goes on and on!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my husband, Khayal. He is so supportive and encouraging of anything I want to pursue. He has had my back every step of the way with EZ Muddy.
