We had the good fortune of connecting with Codi Lyons and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Codi, what do you attribute your success to?
Well, I truly enjoy getting to know fascinating people and my husband loves writing and photography. So, at the risk of sounding cliché, if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. That being said, there is a ton of work that goes into publishing a digital magazine. The thing is, though, we really do enjoy the core of what both our jobs are, so we are able to work through the difficult times much more easily than otherwise.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well, first and foremost, I am a mom to three amazing children. I was a stay-at-home mom until we started the magazine earlier this year. After college, I did sales and was also a flight attendant. I was working for the airlines right up until a couple weeks prior to the birth of my first child. At the time, my husband was in the music industry, working as a tour manager. We both agreed that with the amount of travel he was doing, I should be a stay-at-home mom. Fast forward to early 2022 and we have three children all entering school age, so I had been keeping my eyes open for something I could do either from home or within school hours. An old college friend of mine (and former co-worker in the airline industry) was having success in the digital publishing space and it seemed like a perfect fit.
I am most proud of being a stay-at-home mom for the early developmental years of my children. I think that is one of the most difficult and yet rewarding jobs there are. It was not easy to set aside my old jobs. There is, however, a satisfaction that comes with sacrificing aspects of my career and life in order for my children to get the best possible developmental scenario. Now the challenge comes with having to negotiate the schedules of three children while running a business. My husband, thank goodness, no longer travels, so we divide our time between the kids and the business.
The thing to know about our brand and our story is, simply put, that we love to do it. We love to get to know interesting people and then write about them. It has been a ton of work, but it has also been a ton of fun!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We live in Northern Arizona with tons of scenic areas close by. The Grand Canyon, Sedona, Flagstaff and Jerome are all within a couple hours of our house. So first probably a trip to the Grand Canyon on the train that runs through Williams. Really fun adventure for a day or an overnight. Right down the street from our place is Granite Mountain which is part of the the Prescott National Forest. We love packing the kids up into the truck and getting out into the wilderness for the day. We would have to hit one of the many lakes in our local area. Its all about the outdoors here. Hiking, biking and horse back riding.
We have a couple favorite restaurants in town, Murphy’s and Farm Provisions top those list’s I think. Murphy’s being a great place for steaks and prime rib and Farm Provisions is the most legit Farm to Table restaurant we have come across. Very very good food. Our faith is something that plays a big part of our lives so our guest would be coming to Restoration church with us on Sunday. We have a great group of church friends and we also volunteer at the Sunday school a couple times a month. Lazy G’s brewhouse is our favorite watering hole for sure. They have great food, but the beer they brew in house is top notch. Killer atmosphere with live music and an all around great vibe.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Well, 2 people really. First off, Lindsay DeLong from Laguna Beach Living Magazine and City Living Network. We would not be where we are today without her vision, patience, and talent. She is a bottomless well of knowledge when it comes to digital publishing. My husband is also the best there ever was! He is a co-founder of the magazine and does a lot of the writing, web design, photography, and overall editor-in-chief duties. We wouldn’t have the growth and momentum we do today without those two amazing humans.
