We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Patton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dawn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Honestly, I started my own business as a hobby. It was meant to be something small, an outlet to keep my mind active and my resume strong while I took a break from the corporate world to raise kids. A few months later, my hobby was growing faster than I could keep up with it and so I hired an employee to help me keep up with the workload… and then another employee… and another one. Next thing you know I had 10 employees and a full fledged business!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Something that sets us apart from traditional accounting firms:

We are a female-founded and female-run accounting firm. We are completely remote and most of our team members are work-from-home-moms. It’s important to us that even when we’re rocking messy buns and spit up from our babies we still get to pursue our career goals. It’s something we value for ourselves and our clients. It’s our goal that by taking the bookkeeping and taxes off our clients’ plates, it will free up their time and energy so they can give more to their business and families.

Something that sets us apart from traditional accounting firms:

We know that you are your best investment which is why we focus a lot of our efforts on education. We have an online platform where we teach entrepreneurs how to be their own CFO, how to do their own bookkeeping, how to reframe their money mindset, and more. We love teaching our clients and we are never too busy to answer their questions. If you want to learn, our team is more than happy to teach!

One of our biggest challenges:

One of our biggest challenges as a firm was the fact that our inception was right around the start of Covid. With businesses shutting down and scaling back on investments, it was hard to get clients (at first). So instead of focusing on selling and finding new clients, we choose to focus on serving. We dove deep into educating ourselves on government funding and relief options so that we could educate entrepreneurs and help them apply for assistance – FOR FREE! We rallied behind our favorite small businesses, we cheered them on, we served, and in turn, clients came from the woodworks and hired us faster than we could keep up with! It taught us an important lesson on intention. It has never been our intention to grow a business or to make money. Those are side effects. Our actual intention is to help others live their dream life, build a fulfilling business, and grow their impact. We do this by supporting the backend of their business and keeping their finances in a place that will allow them to fulfill their goals. As a result, our business, our impact, and our reach gets to grow as our clients grow. It’s a wonderful cumulative growth process.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you’re visiting Phoenix I would highly recommend making a trip to Desert Botanical Gardens. And if you have kids, the Children’s Museum is a must! It’s hours upon hours of entertainment for adults and children. As for food, Phoenix is a city for foodies! There is so much variety it’s hard to go wrong (it’s also really hard to come up with recommendations because there are so many good places to eat at!)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This shoutout is dedicated to my amazing team and clients!!! I wouldn’t be where I was at today without their trust, support, and confidence.

To my team: Thank you for not just seeing my vision but actually embracing the vision and running with it. I’m honored you have chosen to be part of our team and I hope we get the opportunity to continue learning and growing together, both in life and business.

To my clients: When we say we love what we do, we actually mean it. It’s clients like you who allow us to live our dreams of crunching numbers all day long. Thank you for letting us be part of your entrepreneurial journey! It’s an honor.
