We had the good fortune of connecting with Janna Kim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janna, how do you define success?

Success to me has no definition or list of requirements to feel that same amount of accomplishment. I believe that we tend to forget the little successes we encounter everyday since we try to micromanage the future rather than appreciating where we are presently. We are so caught up on the next goal to fulfill because of the generational standards that we now have an unconscious insatiability of “wanting more”; we don’t see the little successes we’ve already created in the meantime. The lesson of self-appreciation and recognition is something that is absent in the majority of the generation. The standards of today push us to keep going like constant machines, thus the achievements we do complete go unrecognized. Personal milestones are never admired or reflected on, it’s just a checkmark on the to-do list. Stop and admire yourself before fixating on the next move. I understand how cliche that sounds, however, this generation is in a constant state of “looking for the next thing” or having the constant need to prove oneself, not ever savoring the present. Don’t be a victim to your ego, small everyday wins are still wins. Success has its own meaning varying from person to person, but remember, finally booking that trip you saved up for =success, making your bed =success or getting that promotion you’ve worked so hard for =success; all have the same rush of dopamine so show yourself appreciation in what you’ve accomplished this far. The best is yet to come and whatever outcome it may be, even if it’s not preferable, there’s something destined coming and that will be in alignment of your path.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a recent college graduate, I’ve been working full time as a dermatology medical assistant as well as enrolling myself as a student again while holding a position as the Mission Chair at the Phoenix affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network organization. I got to where I am today as I’ve always had a passion to be involved in healthcare as I believe aiding those in need is one of the fundamentals of humanity and that is what I’m able to contribute to as the Mission Chairman for such an honorable organization as it allows me to reach out to the community and those affected by pancreatic cancer. What I want the world to remember about my story is to remember we are all human and it’s okay to not have your entire life planned out on a google excel sheet; take everything day by day and adjust accordingly. The Universe is working in your favor so believe and manifest the best, always.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had someone visiting the area, I would definitely start with brunch at Sumomaya since they offer bottomless drinks and appetizers at such an amazing deal. Another great brunch spot for something more casual would be Bagels ‘N Bialys in the SkySong area. I think places that are fun and able to grab drinks are all around the Old Town Scottsdale area such as The Canal Club, Diego Pops, The Montauk or any of the local bars in that general region. For dinner, I suggest North Italia, RA sushi, Farm & Craft or EVO. Of course the nightlife is usually a fun experience so definitely would be on the itinerary.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family since they helped shape the person I am today and encourage me. I would also like to mention my best friends (503 forever) who have been my support system through everything. It’s so important to give credit where it’s due because I’d be lost without all their love, guidance and support.
