Meet OZS | Musical Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with OZS and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi OZS, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised here in Mesa, Arizona, in a household where music was played almost every morning! It was cool listening to the older genres of Latin music, my mom and dad loved playing all types of genre of music. I started as a kid playing the drums at church! My dad is the one that taught me how to play the drums and together we played at our church as a music group. He soon taught me the basics of the piano, which led me to a whole new world of music! I definitely thank my dad for teaching me the fundamentals!
In senior year of high school I started “producing” for my friends that rapped! My full name is Oscar Z. Sanchez, and a few of my friends started calling me “OZS” which are my initials. Since then I stuck with it! All my friends knew me for making beats and mixing peoples music in my room! That’s when it hit me, “Why don’t I make music for myself?” So I gave it a try. I made a few bedroom pop genre songs based off a relationship I was in during high school, and that’s what sparked it. A few of my friends and siblings listened to the songs I produced and sang on and they gave me very positive feedback that pushed me to create better songs. That’s when I realized, the songs that they thought were really good, were the ones with meaning and emotion behind them. That’s what I think is the secret to making good music is. People love stuff they can relate to.
Till this day, I still compose music in my room! I just recently released my album “The Memory Box” on all music platforms. My passion for song-writing, producing, and singing will definitely never end.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is simply making music that I genuinely like! Whether that be pop, alternative, or Spanish! I love experimenting with new sounds and getting as creative as I can. That’s what I think sets me apart from others. My parents played a big role as to where I am today. As well as the heartbreaks, friends, and adventures life has thrown at me! The biggest challenges I’ve had to overcome has to be promotion or getting my music heard. Listening to music is free nowadays and yet it’s very tough to get it heard. I’m sure almost every artist struggles getting their talent recognized at first but it’s something that has to be gone through! Together we can all support each other and bring those who put in work to the top! Whether it be local artists, or local businesses. With enough support from one another, we can make it far! I definitely want the world to know that all my music comes from the heart! Behind every song is a story. Good and bad ones! Making music is my way of expressing my thoughts and emotions. I encourage anyone to find ways to express themselves. Life is very short to be stuck in one spot! Find ways to grow your creativity and ways to shine bright!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Downtown Mesa has very good spots! Can never go wrong with the art gallery’s, food, and open mic spots in that area! Make sure to stop by “Jarrod’s Coffee, Tea & Gallery” if you’re ever in the mood for coffee and a unique art gallery to enjoy it in! Gus’s World Famous Chicken is a must go to spot as well! I’ve been there plenty of times and it never misses! As for views, you can never go wrong with the Japanese Friendship Garden in Phoenix. Definitely a beautiful scenery everyone should visit and experience.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely my mom and dad. I love them with all my heart. Without them I wouldn’t have a big of a passion for making music as I do now. Kind of like helping us make the first couple of steps into a new world. Me and my siblings were taught the basic fundamentals of some musical instruments. We grew up around so much music and instruments. It’s honestly a blessing how supportive they are with me and my siblings.
