We had the good fortune of connecting with Pilar Weidman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pilar, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I am a huge believer that the universe only rewards those who take risks in life. I think many who play it safe do so because of the risks of failing but do not understand that failing is how we learn, grow, and become even better. I have failed many times throughout my young adult life and now at 31 with 5 years of having my real estate license I can tell you NOTHING is more painful than being stuck where you do not belong. For me that was not using my full protentional and only day dreaming of what a successful life looks like.

My husband and I both have our own businesses (him in landscaping and myself in real estate) which is a huge risk not having an employer that offers benefits such regular guaranteed wages, overtime, and family and medical leave. Being in real estate means I only make money through commission. While that is a risk and it can become stressful at times we have the potential to grow and bypass any 9-5 job that either of us could acquire without a college degree.

Raising two children and with one on the way it is very important to my husband and I that our children see and understand that taking risks is apart of growth and to never give up on their dreams even if they have to make new ones. We should all learn to fight for the life we deserve and most importantly be kind to ourselves along the way.

What should our readers know about your business?
Like many of us I was not handed a silver platter of opportunities growing up. My memories as a young child unfortunately involved drug abuse and domestic violence.

Through out my high-school years I felt very much like the black sheep of the family. I often called myself the forgotten child and not because my parents didn’t love me but because they were in such a whirlwind in their own lives to pay attention to what was going on with their daughter.

I slowly started hanging out with the wrong crowd, was overly obsessed with getting attention from boys to fill the void I felt within myself and became a complete pot head. I had no motivation, no drive other than when and where the next party was all the way up to my early 20’s.

At the age 23 I was living with my boyfriend (now husband) in a small apartment in Peoria. We became pregnant with our daughter Luna and 3 months after she was born I lost my mother to a drug overdose. Loosing her was difficult but the thought of spiraling into a similar life she chose fueled me to become the best person I could be not only for myself but my child. I first began to work on my health and focus on what made me happy and a better mom and person.

At 3o weeks pregnant with my second child at the age of 26 I went to real estate school and passed my exam just weeks after giving birth and since then have been pursuing a life I believe my family deserves.

We have since moved from that apartment and live on a 2 acre farm. We have goats, pigs, chickens, bunnies, a donkey, two amazing dogs and more. My kids and I both take horsemanship/riding lessons and I truly feel like my husband and I are doing the best to provide our kids with a loving and enriched childhood.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As an Arizona native I have to say one of my favorite things to do and check out are the Phoenix Art Museum followed by an amazing restaurant called The Old Spaghetti Factory located in the Historic Roosevelt Neighborhood. I also enjoy hiking at some of the best trails Phoenix has to offer with Camelback Mountain being one of my go to hikes. Another great option for families is the Wild Life World Zoo located in Litchfield Park off of Northern Ave and the 303. There you can see not only animals but massive aquariums, a safari park, rides, and more. They also have a great restaurant where you can sit and eat next to a giant aquarium filled with all sorts of fish including sharks.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my wonderful husband who has always supported every dream I have gone for and also the incredible real estate team Phoenix House Hunters for taking me under their wing and help further my expertise and craft in the real estate world.
