We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin McGuire and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It started out with me seeing a children’s magician perform for a group of friends that we knew. After seeing his show, I knew I wanted to do this, bringing lot of entertainment, laughter, and magic to people. My thought process was to do what he did and make it my own. I was raised with the mindset that you can do anything you put your mind to. If you are truly hungry enough, you will achieve that very thing. And I made a lot of mistakes along the way. Don’t give up!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So, when I was growing up. I was a latch key kid. And if you don’t know what that is. It’s when I came home from school, I locked the door and waited until mom got home. The main rule was don’t set the house on fire and don’t fight with your brother. He was older than me. Anyways, my brother and I helped raise each other during this time. Side note, Life lessons were being learned here, and that was being independent. While we waited for mom to get home. To stay busy while she was at work. My mom would buy me these rector sets that took hours to complete with motors and moving parts. Now, fast forward into my teenage years. I wanted to play guitar and become a famous Rock N Roll guitar star!. That did not happen. But I still hold on to that dream to this day. When I finish high school. My dad calls and says ” son you need to come out to Virginia ” I was like sure. I did not want to go. So, I never told my mom he called. Two weeks later he called back and asked to speak to my mom. Two weeks later I moved to Virginia and went on to trade school and became an electrician. The skills of learning a trade taught me. When you have very little resources, and you must get a job done you learn to think outside of the box. This became a great skill set in being a magician at creating new ideas from different effects. The trade gives me money to buy magic stuff and the ability to support myself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A great place(s) to see would be in DC the spy exhibit, Hard Rock Cafe for drinks and a quick bite. Giving enough time I would also check out the wax museum and Smithsonian. In Virginia, the historic battle grounds of the Civil War. Walking where history had happened. Downtown Fredericksburg has a great selection of different places to eat and little shops. Restaurants to eat at Orofino’s, Maggiano’s and even Firebirds. Travel a little further down to Richmond and you can see the science exhibit.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom would be the first person on top of that list. Then my wife, she is truly amazing. Then Harry Houdini the 1973 movie starring Tony Curtis. That was the first real time I saw magic happen. As I got older, I met a few more people. Louis Myer ” my mentor “who goes by Louis the magician. He was the person who helped me get started doing shows. Followed by The Great Zucchini, Eric Knaus who I followed for two summers watching and performing with him. Michael Taggart was another magician that I had spent time with. He knew theater and doing plays. So, when it came time to do stage shows or promote them, Michael showed me some very important and valuable things. Then as I grew in magic. I went on and joined the International Brotherhood of Magicians as well. When I jointed Washington DC Ring 50 sometime later, I became V.P for two years and President for one year. Because I belong to a magic club. I was able to meet so many other great talented people who be major influences in my career. And to say this again. My wife is very supportive. Example Tammy, pick a card. Or watch this. What do you think? This was painful for her sometimes. But with a smile, she would go and tell me everything she saw that I did wrong. Then tell me to fix it.
