Meet Cat Machin | Space Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cat Machin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cat, how do you think about risk?
I have taken the risk of transitioning from a corporate job to a full time space artist. The transition was a bit scary, I didn’t know what I would do with myself. I ended up working as a cleaner for a few months doing peoples houses and so on. The hardest part was not knowing what I should do. I definitely don’t recommend that. For everyone, I highly recommend developing a side hustle or working out some direction before the jump is made for sure. But it all worked out in the end! Who knew my fascination over the stars would take me to where I am now? It’s craaaazy! I just started painting, and some really cool people loved it, and here we are!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think it’s probably my experience in the video game and music industry that sets me apart from others. By that I mean learning how to work with a team. I think it has something to do with the business side of things more than the art itself.
I just think the way you progress in anything in life is failing a bunch a time and learning from a lot of mistakes. It’s being okay with not being okay. Same with anything in life. there’s a point where we do not know anything. I think the most important part is being okay with not being perfect.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The most exciting thing (and this is for any area) is to check out the stars! Just look at a light pollution map and see the best place to look at the stars. Maybe bring a chair and drinks and just stargaze all night and be all cozy! I think there’s a few things where you can connect with something bigger. I would recommend to do that! Half the park is after dark!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wanted to give Bryce Allan a shoutout as he is the person who originally the put me in contact with Dustin and Ian (my husband) and the space industry here in the US
