We had the good fortune of connecting with Wallace Book and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Wallace, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was inspired by my father Wallace Begay, he was an amazing visual artist and taught me alot of the basics of painting and sketching when I was really young. After he had passed, I felt compelled to take all the lessons he taught me and make something I could leave, a small impression on the world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a portrait artist, I use acrylic paints and create on old forgotten vinyl records. Not too many people use vinyl records, its a unique shape, and its that shape that makes it a challenge to find images that fit it well. I started to post the process of my creations on social media, and with Tiktok, gained a following. It was a lot of work, trying to find my footing and come up with unique ways that captured my work yet still engaging with an audience online. I also play in a native rockabilly band called the Reztones, and used both mediums to show the world what I can do. I learned over the years that my art, and my time is valuable, and its always important to create for yourself first. I’ve had alot of ups and downs with this business, but it took me a lot of discipline, and planning to make sure it stays sustainable.
I get messages, and comments that I inspire others to pick up a brush, or a guitar, that means the world to me. I never thought that I’d be an inspiration to others, so I am always truly thankful for the world’s generosity and kind words.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When I do have friends come and visit, I always try to show them the best foods; Sonoran dogs from El Guero Canelo, Tacos from Tacos Apson, and frybread from the San Xavier Mission food stands. Bopping around 4th ave and checking out some of the best haunts, shops, and more. Tucson always has great foods, and a great artistic vibe. Day trips to Bisbee and Tombstone are a must,

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My partner Leah Kat, my family and my supporters for believing in me.
