We had the good fortune of connecting with Seema Jot Kaur and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Seema Jot, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

The thought process behind starting my businesses, Blue Iris Joy and Saguaro Institute Tucson, came from a combination of timing and circumstance. I had just retired from my corporate career and my study of yoga and wellness began taking up a majority of my time and energy. In addition, a year prior to my retirement I had taken a course on becoming a Birth Doula. It was very freeing to be able to tap into my artistic and creative sides after so many years of corportate work.

Because I was in a transitional time and my yoga teacher, Guru Jagat based out of Los Angeles was an extremely successful entrepreneur it inspired me to venture into creating a business. She taught a business school course, called “Creating an Aquarian Business.” She also had a quote: “Stop hiding, I believe in you greatly.”

I became part of a women’s community that she led and learned about the principles of creating an Aquarian business and put it into practice. What is an Aquarian business you might ask? It is based on your unique vision as the creator of the business and does not rely on the traditional teaching of comparative market analysis.
Instead, the focus of creating my businesses was to hone in on exactly what I wanted to offer and build it from the ground up.

My business is evolving to include Wellness Weekends where people come togther and practice yoga and learn about writing for example. I am creating an Aquarian Think-Tank where like-minded creatives can come together and learn and teach. The weekends also incude healers, astrologers, nail artists as a few examples. My business and I exist to bring healing to the planet. I am also evolving into offering Yoga Teacher Training sessions and I am very excited about that addition to my business.

At a more practical level, I wanted to be able to share my love of yoga I study, which is called Kundalini yoga with as many people as possible. Because it was such a transformational and life-changing experience for me that I knew it could be for others as well. The Birth Doula offering was a natural pairing for me as the vision for my business was to offer wholistic wellness support. I also have offerings that include Death Doula support and Oracle Card readings. Ultimately, it was important to start my own business in order to help others on their journey through life. My business provides women and men tools to navigate this human incarnation.

Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets me apart is that I offer a wholistic and collaborative approach to wellness and healing. Saguaro Institute Tucson and Blue Iris Joy are a collection of offerings and services that uplift, enhance and improve the human condition. The possibilites of offerings are limitless and ever-changing because of the collaboration aspect. The signature “Wellness Weekends” offerings are dynamic becuase I collaborate with other wellness thought-leaders and teachers making the topics for the Wellness Weekends endless. These offerings are what I am most excited about. If you are reading this and you would like to collaborate with me, please reach out.

I am most proud of my Birth Doula work becuase as a mom of three children and a grandmother of three grandchildren, two of whom I was thier Birth Doula this work is near and dear to my heart. Bringing a child into the world is sacred work and I am here to support the mothers, their partners and their babies.

I got where I am today through hard work, dedication, and grit. In addition, I did it and continue to do it step, by step. It is a gradual process that really never ends. I am still in the growth and development stage of my business. I am not really sure that this phase ever ends if you want to remain fresh and relevant.

Starting, growing and maintaining a business is not for the faint of heart. As I mentioned, it takes persistence and a true vision to carry you through. What gets me through the challenges is my yoga practice. It provides the basis to live my entire life, including the care and feeding of my business. My name, Seema Jot means “Freeing myself from all limitations by merging with God’s Divine Light.” So that is why yoga and meditation are key components of my existence.

I have learned along the way to be patient, calm, and steadfast. Everything always works out as it should. The Universe is always conspiring for my (our) greatest good and has my (our) back. All I need for this to happen is faith and trust in that truth. Starting a business is a leap of faith. It is never a failure, because when you follow your dreams, you win. It is not about the outcome, but about the process.

I want the world to know that I am passionate about Community Building and helping everyone survive and thrive during this time on the planet. It is a challenging time, but challenges are not without their rewards. The Saguaro Institute offers tools and technology to survive and thrive as a human in 2023 and beyond.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

This is a great question and one I have actually done as my dear friend and Creative Brand Director visits fairly frequently and we have our favorite spots.

Food: Saffron Indian Bistro, Lemongrass Restaurant (homemade Nepalese fare), Flora’s Market Run

For our Herbal Infusions: Tucson Herb Store- It has Harry Potter Diagon Alley vibes

Hiking: I live in the desert, so we having hiking trails at our disposal from my property or just a few miles down the road.

Nature in the middle of town: Tucson Botanical Garden (I have an annual membership which incudes a guest every visit)

We went to a poetry workshop at the University of Arizona Poetry Center. That was amazing and is a favorite thing for me to do and share with my guests.

Have to mention the Tucson Gem Show- a favorite of all Yogi’s and Aquarian Souls

Metaphyscical Shop: The Ninth House

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

As I mentioned in the inspiration for starting my business, it came from my Teacher, Guru Jagat. She was a thought leader, rebel, and extraordinary leader. She created Ra Ma Institute For Applied Yogic Science and Technology that encompasses four yoga studios in the US and internationally as well as a non-profit studio. She paved the way for me and many other women to start businesses become leaders.

I am also grateful for my Creative Director Amanda Voss of Mood Altars. She has been and continues to be pivotal in helping me to bring my visons to life.
