We had the good fortune of connecting with Madison Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Madison, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in Arkansas. I have been around animals my entire life. I started riding horses when I was just two years old with my aunt. We always had dogs growing up and any other small critter I could sneak in the door. I unfortunately never had cats growing up due to my mom being very allergic to them. A ranch I worked at always had barn cats running around and it was always exciting when they had kittens. I moved in with other family in middle school that had adult cats and that is truly where my love for cats started. I didn’t own a cat until I moved in with my now partner who had two cats at the time. His male cat Frosty opened my heart to a new world with cats, He was so loving towards me. It was heart breaking when we had to say goodbye to him. He lived a good long life, but some unfortunate health problems put us in place we could no longer keep him comfortable. After his passing, I was earning for the love from a cat, we got Rogue, a cute, super affectionate, medium haired black kitty who lights up my world every day.
One day while walking my dogs in my neighborhood. I saw a cat with a degloved tail (the skin and hair had been ripped off leaving the muscle and bone exposed) I knew I had to try to help that cat in whatever way I could but had no idea how to even start. I got on Facebook and was connected to a group called Feral Cat Warriors, I began trying to trap the cat. Instead caught many others. I got them into the vet, spayed and neutered and released back to where I trapped them. I never did catch that cat with the degloved tail, but I have seen it since, and it looks like he/she healed okay. That cat started it all for me with saving cats, I am now a board member of the rescue and TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) group. I dedicated all the free time I have to the cats in my community between being a mother of a 4-year-old little boy, partner to my significant other and working part time at a local veterinary hospital. These cats are my life and I hope to one day, to see a day where there are no unaltered, homeless cats on the streets,
What should our readers know about your business?
What sets us apart from others is that we do rescue and TNR (Trap Neuter Return). Most others do one or the other. We started with just TNR but quickly found out that we couldn’t just trap theses cats, alter and return them. How do you just leave babies behind that come out from under a house screaming at you for attention or food but are not yet big enough for spay and neuter? How do you return a nice friendly cat that deserves to be indoors, safe and loved by a human they crave? How do you return and old or sick cat to suffer on the streets? You don’t! You start a rescue ha-ha. This why we branched to taking these cats into our care and getting our 501c3. We are a small group, and we try our absolute best. Another reason we are much different is that we are foster care based and do not have a building. We simply do not have the funds for the overhead. We would rather put every cent we get into helping the cats. We hope to one day have a building so that we can help more cats and provide more for the community. Last year (2022) we TNR’d over 700 cats and adopted over 500 domesticated cats through PetSmart Charities. We also transferred many to other recuse partners. Thats over 1200 cats we stopped from producing more to the population and over 1200 cats’ lives were changed for the better. We hope to double that number in 2023.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Feral Cat Warriors Emily Black- another board member of the Non-profit 501c3
Emily started this group and now we run it together with the help of all our volunteers. Emily has undying love for cats. She had dedicated her entire life to these little souls and will do whatever it takes to make a difference in their lives. I am so grateful for the friendship her and I have. People say you can’t run a business with your best friend but here we are killing it every day. We complement each other well and have different strengths yet had the same opinions and goals on what we want to achieve. Our goal is to change our county and then branch out as far as we can to make a difference in this world. These cats need us to be their voice and protect them.
