By far the most common conversation we have with the folks we interview is about work-life balance. Starting a business or pursuing a creative career makes finding work life balance really tough because there is no clear start and end to one’s work day. I gave up on the idea of work life balance a long time ago! It never looked like a 2 sided balance scale to begin with. An ever-evolving, matrix-like, three dimensional venn diagram was more like it. There is tremendous value in having a work life balance. Owning your own business can easily consume you so it’s extremely important to prioritize personal time. Speaking from experience, when first starting out my business I wanted to be successful as quickly as possible and by doing that, I missed out on a lot with my family and lost a few friends along the way. It didn’t feel good, my motivation started to dwindle, and I became worn out. So, I reprioritized my life. I do not work on Sundays and don’t answer any work calls or emails after 6pm the rest of the week, unless it’s an emergency. Being a young entrepreneur and now running three businesses my work life balance has significantly changed over time. Most days I find myself completing tasks for one business and jumping into things for another. Nowadays since I feel like I’ve been constantly on the go, the importance of having a good work life balance has definitely heightened. Self care and taking the time to decompress is extremely important as an entrepreneur and a creative in order for us to put out our best work and thrive.
