We had the good fortune of connecting with Alejandra Rubio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alejandra, what inspires you?
When I first started in my career I was very much inspired my the photographer Lewis Hine. His work had inspired me to take the risk in documenting and shedding light to what is going on around me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One thing that I love doing is printing my images and manipulating them. I would print them on fabric and make dresses out of them. Or print them on photo paper and paint, bead, throw asphalt, rip them, or bury them in dirt. I would print them extremely large or very small. I don’t like to see them in a box behind a glass and just hug up on a wall. Where people just walks by and judge them. I want my audience to engage with them and feel their soul.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I currently live in Carson City, NV. So we be up at Lake Tahoe enjoying the summer air. Then maybe a downtown concert. But other than that we be playing card games and laughing. That’s what I do when I travel back home to Camp Verde, AZ. I try to go back home once in a while. Especially at the end of February because that’s my tribals (Yavapai-Apache Nation) Exodus. We would have runners coming in from San Carlos and then we would remember our ancestors by having Mountains Spirit dancers and other dancers come and join us. Then we go back home an play card games and enjoy each other’s company. Occasionally we would drive to Sedona to enjoy the red rocks or to Prescott to enjoy a movie.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Honestly, I don’t just one specific person or group, organization that I can recognize. I am extremely grateful for everyone in my life that I have came into contact with. Because they ALL helped shape, guide, and lead me to where I am today. I am very grateful that everyone who has taken that risk in teaching, mentoring, and hiring me. I have learned so much from everyone. So my shoutout is to everyone who has done that for me. I love you all.
