We had the good fortune of connecting with Ally Veldstra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ally, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I think there are many habits that have helped me succeed in this industry. For one, having a good and positive attitude goes a long way. Other habits would be, having good communication, surrounding myself with other positive and helpful artists, learning new styles and trends that are constantly evolving and changing that have helped me become a better hair and makeup artist. I think the only way to succeed is by lifting others up and helping the people around you succeed too. I am very thankful for those who have helped me create successful habits and were willing to help me grow in my industry. Now my goal is to help others create good habits and watch them flourish. I will stay true to myself, to my clients and continue to surround myself in a positive and supportive environment. Creating these habits have brought me great success and friendships along the way.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I would consider hair and makeup a creative art form in its own way. I strive to create work that is my own, but where my clients feel beautiful in their own skin. I want them to still look and feel like themselves, just a little amplified. There were many bumps along the road to help me get to where I am. I am thankful for them and for shaping me to be a better artist. I have learned what type of work environments I don’t want, but also found the ones I do. I know what and who to surround myself with in order to succeed. We live in a world of filters and comparisons, but my work is real and raw. We have flaws, we have imperfect skin, but we are still beautiful. I want my art in my hair or makeup to reflect that and the passion I have for what I do.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As I am still new to the area, I think the adventure would be fun for both of us! We would have to see the Grand Canyon, head to Jerome and eat at the Haunted Hamburger, we would visit Sedona and Flagstaff for their pure beauty. I think even heading to the Phoenix zoo would be a good time too. The list is really endless of what to do and where to go. I, myself, am still exploring new places everyday and I have not been disappointed yet.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my family and my friends. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. My husband has always been supportive in my growth and ventures. To my friends who are in the same industry and have helped me educate myself further and grow as an artist. Shoutout to the friends who have referred me or let me use them to practice new skills and keep myself refreshed as I learn and refine my hair/makeup skills.
