Meet AMAN BHATIA | Postdoc Research Associate

Hi AMAN, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
As I reflect on my professional journey, I have come to realize that my true passion lies in academia and the pursuit of knowledge. Becoming a professor is the pinnacle of my career aspirations, as it would allow me to contribute to the intellectual development of future generations while engaging in meaningful research and scholarly activities. I believe that my extensive experience in biosensing and wearable technology and my dedication to lifelong learning have equipped me with the necessary skills and expertise to make a significant impact in the academic community. I am excited about the prospect of mentoring students, fostering critical thinking, and pushing the boundaries of knowledge through collaboration and research. Ultimately, my goal as a professor is to inspire and empower students, create a positive learning environment, and contribute to the advancement of my field through teaching and scholarship.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I had a diverse career, beginning with Bachelor’s in Science in the field of “Industrial Chemistry”, followed by Master’s in Science in the field of Applied Chemistry with specialization in Natural Polymer Chemistry. I am proud of getting selected as an exchange student for a fully sponsored educational trip to Japan (Sakura Science Club). This trip was arranged and sponsored by Japan Science and Technology.

Following completion of master’s degree, I worked as a Project Assistant at a globally admired company “Indian oil corporation” for 5 months. Meanwhile I got an opportunity to pursue PhD at Pusan National University, South Korea. I received prestigious Brain Korea Fellowship to pursue PhD in Chemistry (Specialization in Biosensors and Nanoelectrochemistry).

After, successfully defending my PhD and working as a postdoctoral researcher at Pusan National University, I acquired position as a Research Associate at University of Arizona, USA. The journey has been challenging and demanded lots of hardwork and perseverance.

The biggest lesson I learnt on my way from India to Japan to South Korea and now the USA is that with efforts and dedication, anyone can achieve their dreams and make a successful career with limited resources as well.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would certainly show my friend the following spots: (1) Saguaro National Park
(2) Scenic trails to see sunset from Mt. Lemmon.
(3) Presidio San Agustin Del Museum (to show the history of Tucson)
(4) Tucson Reid park Zoo

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my current supervisor, Dr. Philipp Gutruf. His guidance, support, and mentorship have been instrumental in shaping my professional journey so far at UofA. Throughout our time working together, he has consistently provided valuable insights, challenged me to think critically, and encouraged me to push my boundaries. His expertise and dedication to my growth has helped me develop not only as a professional but also as an individual. I am truly grateful for his unwavering belief in my abilities and the opportunities he has provided me to excel. This shoutout is a testament to his exceptional leadership and the positive impact he has had on my career. Thank you, Dr. Gutruf, for being an inspiring mentor and for playing a significant role in my growth.
