We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda L. Quick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amanda L., putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The single most important decision that I made that has contributed to my success is asking for help! Asking for help from those who had started businesses long before me, those who started just a few years before me, those who were just starting, and also those who were resources for business owners.- lawyers, bookkeepers, bankers, etc.

This not only allowed me to learn so much in such little time, but it also helped me start building an extremely supportive network. There’s something about asking for help and also answering some of their questions with “I don’t know” that opens you up to learn so so much!

What should our readers know about your business?
Along with what seems like millions of others – I’m a small business coach + online community leader! My sweet spot is strategy – helping small business owners break things down into an actionable plan that they can actually follow. I’m most excited to continue to be more comfortable being who I am and not necessarily who other coaches are. We dig in. We have fun. There’s some cussing. There are hard questions. There are work sessions + coaching sessions. It’s definitely not bland or vanilla!

I started as an owner of a coworking space that also offered childcare. While we have since closed down that journey led me to where I am today. I’m an open book in the sense that I take all the good, bad, and ugly situations from my experiences and help my clients. Whether it’s a connection I made that would be helpful for them, a templated proforma someone sent to me they can use, or a situation that didn’t work out at all that they can avoid.

There were 2 big challenges with our space: making enough money to keep it open and going and also me burning out as I realized I’m a visionary and not an implementor.

I wanted to sit with the members and help with their questions, host events, and network – but there are a lot of things that come into play with running a brick-and-mortar. I found myself spending more of my days doing things I didn’t love vs. what I did love and that was running me down, fast.

Things I’ve learned – ha! So freaking much! Accolades are amazing to get, but don’t pay the bills 🙂 Creating systems and processes are so boring but so helpful and crucial. Have a good relationship with your bookkeeper to actually know your numbers. Asking for help and also surrounding yourself with other supportive small businesses will do wonders for you and your business.

What should people know?! In a magical full circle opportunity, 6 original members and I are starting an agency-type program for those looking to level-up in their business and we launch in August 20221

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely start the day by getting coffee at The Grind Coffee House (ice vanilla nut + splash of almond milk) and then head downtown to The District. It has such a great feel and has so many cute little shops to go in and look around.

Throughout the week we’d eat at some local and my favorites: Nourish Cafe & Market, 44 Stone, try to snag a table on the patio of FlatBranch, and get a sweet treat at Range Free.

Being a big fan of being outdoors we’d explore the MKT trails and Stephens Lake, and depending on the season we’d hit up whatever sport is in season at the University of Missouri.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The members of The Hatchery! I’m pretty sure they believed in me way more than I believed in myself and helped keep me going with their kindness and support!
