Meet Andrew Cox | Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Cox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Nexus was a dream of mine for 20 years. I’ve always been obsessed with books and started collecting with the intention to open a store about 20 years ago. I knew I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life working for other people so over a period of two decades I went to every Goodwill, thrift store, yard sale, estate sales and book store that I could find. We opened on August 3rd of 2022. Prior to opening I had just shy of 23,000 books. We have about 10,000 books in the store now and I have about 7,000 still in storage. I really wanted a place that the local occult community could call home. Honestly, if money wasn’t an issue I would have much rather turned Nexus into a library and research center but I have bills to pay just like everyone else.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Nexus is the only occult bookstore in southern Arizona. There are many metaphysical shops that sell a very limited amount of occult books but no one has the selection we have. We carry books on magick (yes it’s spelled with a K at the end), witchcraft, astrology, paranormal, extraterrestrials, cryptozoology, secret societies, conspiracies, alternative history, and more! We also carry deity statues like Isis, Thoth, Shiva, Odin, Baphomet, etc. We have wet specimens, crystals, incense, and tarot decks as well.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love museums and food so this would be a fun trip. Food first. How do you visit Tucson and not go to BKs or El Guero Canelo for a sonoaran hotdog? I would also suggest visiting Lindy’s on 4th ave.
Places of interests that I love to visit are Mt. Lemon, The Pima Air and Space museum, The Reid Park Zoo, Old Tucson Studios and The Desert Museum are all fun and unique places to visit.
I would also take my guest to what I call our “sister” store, Four of Wands. They are a great metaphysical store on Broadway. Of course we’d also need to stop by Zia Records and The Painted Lady for a tattoo.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Nexus would not exist if it wasn’t for my friends and family. They really rallied behind me and all pitched in one way or another to make this dream a reality. From helping me paint, to building the bookshelves, to completely redoing the bathroom and the electrical in the store and of course trucking hundreds of boxes of books from storage to the store and filling the shelves.
