We had the good fortune of connecting with Angellica Harris-Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angellica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Ever since I graduated from high school I just felt like a 9-to-5 was not for me. I’ve always loved doing hair, but didn’t have the courage to tell my family that the dream was not college, but to own my own salon. I acted on faith in 2012 after quitting because the new job that I hate it. And it’s been a success ever since.

What should our readers know about your business?
In 2012 I remember being on my call center job and in the middle of the phone call that I was taking my cell phone ring so I sent it to voicemail. Five minutes later I received a text from the same number that called me asking me if I was available to do a set of box braids. I was already having a bad day at work and so I contemplate it for maybe an hour or two before I even responded. After having conversations with myself going back-and-forth I decided I’m just gonna take a chance. I ended my day at the call center in a job during my lunch And decided to take that client. From that day forward I decided to put my dreams first I took every penny that I had and put it into braiding supplies. after taking that one client I decided to post more ads on craigslist, Facebook, and even Twitter. From that day I will take about one to three people a day and decided I didn’t want to go back to the cost on a job so I quit. It was such a rush making my own money so fast. I immediately started thinking of catchy brand names for my business. My grandmother went out and got me a salon chair. To this day I still have that chair, people call it the “blessed chair”. Nothing about this journey was easy there were days I didn’t get a book and there were days I was so over but that I would have to cancel clients because I was too tired to take them! The day I passed my state board in 2014 with the same day as on my first lease to my very first a salon!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well I live in Myrtle Beach so that would be easy. The first place I would take my best friend if she was visiting me at home will be the Ocean. There is a small bar by the pier they sells really good food and drinks so of course we will soak that up. We will visit museums, the mall, and cute little beach shops so that she can take souvenirs homes..

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The first person to ever give me an opportunity in their establishment was this Barber who goes by the name Geez. He allowed me to wake up under him for four months while I studied for my state board. He even tutored me. He’s the one person Who encouraged me to keep going the first time I felt the state board. I always mention him in any of my success stories because without his words of encouragement I probably would’ve gave up after the first fail.
