We had the good fortune of connecting with Angie Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Angie, what do you attribute your success to?
Staying true to photographing what makes me happy is what has been the most important factor behind the success of my brand and my business. I enjoy light and shadows, but also (more importantly) people and emotions. Weddings allow me to capture these things I enjoy in a single event. Choosing a wedding photographer allows each couple to choose how they relive their wedding day. Staying true to the way I see the world gives a different perspective on how each couples’ story is told and I am beyond honored that people want to relive their wedding day through my eyes. So ultimately, my business’s success can be attributed to me staying true to myself and knowing there are couples out there who welcome and embrace the way I present their story.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My approach to every wedding is simple — Stay open. I go into each wedding and each story with an open mind as to what will unfold and what I will see. I don’t go in with preconceived visions of what I want the wedding to look like or what photographs I want to take but rather I want to see the moments and stories for what they are. In reality, every story is so different from the next and no wedding should look like someone else’s because it’s not someone else’s wedding. I allow myself to be inspired by the couple, their story, their family and all that unfolds on their special day. I am proud of this approach because it’s truly all I know and I am lucky to continue to receive referrals because of this approach.
It has taken 12 years of photographing weddings to get to where I am in my business. Every wedding I have been a part of has taught me something new, thus giving me an approach to weddings that works best for me, and ultimately for the couple. This means I spend the time with each couple that is necessary to capture the full story of their wedding, because it is imperative for me that their story is told.
The biggest challenge almost always seems to be myself, and having that dreaded “imposter syndrome.” I am naturally an introvert so imposter syndrome can take over in a big way but having that support, not only within my community but also with my couples and their families, is the best way to help overcome that feeling. The trust I receive from the couple is essential to my workflow and once I am in my zone at a wedding, I am 100% focused on delivering my best because each couple deserves that.
I want people to know that I see your individuality and I am inspired by it. It is why Candid Sol exists. I am not here to sell someone on my photographs, but rather to be there if they want my photographs to capture who they really are and tell the story of their wedding day for generations to come. This is my passion and I want to share it with the people who appreciate it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
What would be awesome about my best friend coming to visit me in Tucson is that we would be exploring it together because I was born and raised in Phoenix. I have lived in Tucson 3 years now but moved here only a few months before covid started, so I have only recently started to explore Tucson. My favorite place to go is Gates Pass. I love the view on the drive down and in the desert there is by far my favorite place in Arizona to enjoy our unbeatable sunsets. We would set up our little picnic table (like my husband and I do every anniversary) and enjoy nature. For our picnic, we would pick up some Rollie’s Mexican food. We would make sure we leave nothing behind in the desert.
My best friend and I would spend a day just relaxing in the Mercado District because Wow! What a place! It is easily the spot that I can spend and be immensely inspired by the scenery, it’s so beautiful. So many adorable shops and restaurants at the MSA Annex will provide for plenty to do and enjoy.
We would have breakfast at Tania’s 33 because I freaking love that place, and then lunch at Rocco’s. I don’t know how Rocco’s does it, but their Chef Salad with their Ranch dressing – YES!
I would have my best friend come visit during market season so that we could frequent the markets with the best of Tucson’s local artists and creatives. There is such a great creative scene down here, and I would want my best friend to experience that.
Honestly, I would reach out to so many people and post on my social media to get recommendations from the true locals, because that is how I want to experience Tucson. I want to try everything and go everywhere so I can know where the real gems are. Feel free to find me on Instagram and send me your recommendations because I need them!

Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc. that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
Clearly, in every story, there are multiple people who deserve recognition for helping a business owner start and build their business. In my case, there are a few people who I can attribute my success to and deserve a truly sincere shout out over the rest.

To Tina and Kevin of Sierra Blanco Photography. For the past 12 years, I have been second shooting weddings for them and they have given me more education, confidence and life experiences than I ever could have imagined. I am grateful that they took a chance on this unexperienced photographer. Tina and Kevin, you are more than my mentors and my team, you are my family.

To my parents – My mom for always supporting anything I wanted to do and always finding a way to keep my spirits up. My dad for always being supportive of me doing photography and giving me my twin lens camera that I cherish more than anything. It is my most prized possession.

To Fabiola Bedoya. I have only just met you this year but the confidence that you have pushed to bring out of me and the safe place you provide, not only through Tucson Creative Comadres, but just by you being you, means so much more to me than you will ever understand. Because of you, I feel like I belong in this community and because of you, I am getting to be a part of this interview. You are a rarity in this world.

To my Tia Gina. You have always had a way of making me feel special and seeing my true potential. I still attribute my taking photography seriously to you and the day you pushed me to sign up for photography classes in college. Honestly, only you could have done that, and for that I am grateful, because none of this would have been possible.
