We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashanti Adams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashanti, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always wanted to be something BIG . I used to make and sell headbands and other things and I really enjoyed it . I started this business because women always need something to make them feel comfortable in their OWN skin and what better way to do than to buy lingerie. Feel and look sexy while drinking a glass of wine even . Men enjoy it too ; this is something for men and women in a way .
What should our readers know about your business?
My brand is SexDOLL Exotic Wear . I sell a number of things such as as lingerie, robes, 2 pieces (sweatsuits) , dance wear, and coats .I got to where I am now by marketing and really pushing for people to know who I am . I am very proud of the way I market and try to get my business name and inventory out to the world . It is not easy in the beginning you have to gain trust of customers that you have good quality clothing, materials and that it fits correctly. There are a lot of things that go into the clothing business you need to know what’s IN and what’s OUT as far as styles and looks and I can say I keep up with that well . There will always be a challenge .. finding clientele, keeping clientele, finding vendors or new product ideas , ect . I just choose to keep going . Why? I have already invested so much into myself and my business that I won’t stop there . I have to keep going because the only way is up . I have had friends in the past start business and I thought I supported them , starting my own I have learned ways that I could have supported them better I did not understand then but I do now . I continue to support those people I just do better in ways I would want the same support . I want the world to know that no matter what , where you come from , where you’ve been it’s up to you to get where you are going . It is up to you to make a change and make things better for yourself . It will never be easy but I heard in the end it is all worth it .
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am from Chicago, Illinois so of course I love the city life . The lights, big buildings, people , traffic and opportunities. I like lively people . I am a great vibe with positive energy so I like the people I am around to match that . I love being out but I also like being in the house . My perfect vacation in the winter would be to a beautiful cabin in the woods , lit up with a fireplace and the most gorgeous view. I love the outdoors it’s so calm and peaceful. I do like the night life as well I go out sometimes but I always sit there like “I should have stayed home” I know I am not the only one. . I do love an adventure though I am down for almost anything .
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe most of it to myself . I go through a lot on a daily that I am sure others could relate to . A lot of those things tend to put me in a head space of “this is too much” or “I don’t think I can” . It has always been up to me to overcome that. At times there is not a lot of support or motivation but I have to keep myself going ! I have to remind myself that this is my life and I am living for me so I have to make the best of it . I push myself harder than anyone else because yeah I can be told I can to do it .. but in the end it’s all up to me .
