We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandy Knight and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always imagined myself as a business owner. I knew that I wanted the ability to create my own experience behind the chair as an artist.l
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I look at each person as a unique creation. Hair is so personal. What I love about what I do is how you can transform the way a person sees themselves. Hairstylists change lives in the way they help others express themselves, and that energy expands into the world in the way that person flows through life having elevated self confidence. It’s a magnet.
It was not easy to get here. There is this pressure to be a social media expert, take the best photos and it’s a very competitive industry. As a hairstylist, we are always learning new ways to create color or haircutting shapes, and with that, navigating how that that will support our guests.
I spent most of my career as a cosmetology instructor. I was a part of an organization that was always improving curriculum and adding more value to their program. I had access to great resources which allowed my skills to improve. In addition, I worked alongside incredibly talented hairstylists and makeup artists on location doing wedding hair and that gave me the confidence to go independent.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my bestie were to visit Arizona, the first thing we would do is take a day trip to Sedona for some hiking and great food. For the second day, we would go Prescott to kayak Watson lake and then hit up the local tapas spot for great wine and food. We would finish our adventure on day three, traveling to page Arizona to see horseshoe bend.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Babydoll Hair Salon and the Aveda institutes. I learned so much about salon ownership working along side Sabrina Miller Castillo. She shared so much information about ownership, operations and how to build and train a team. While working with the AVEDA institutes, I was able to lead students in the pursuit of their professional goals and building skills, I learned so much about the importance of culture and values and how that impacts the day to day operations.
