We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Wood and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittany, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting A Girl and Her Ghosts was that I needed an outlet to turn my pain from the grief of losing my mother into something beautiful. It started as this journey to find my mother on the other side, but quickly evolved into this creative expression of honoring all the souls in my life; both living and deceased. A Girl and Her Ghosts has been this healing, safe space for me to exist in and create my own form of art – one that is spiritual, intentional, healing, and most importantly, functional. A Girl and Her Ghosts helped me heal from losing my mother and was the space I needed to throw myself into when I lost my father in 2021 shortly after finding out I was pregnant. I don’t think I would have survived without her. She is now this entity that is an extension of my soul and reminds me that the other side exists and death is not finite. I am honoring the eternal soul by continuing to create these beautiful spiritual products and offer my healing services with intention and love. A Girl and Her Ghosts will always be my sacred space to create and channel through, but my dream is for her to continue to be that space for others and deepen my connection with my community. A Girl and Her Ghosts will continue to be a space where all the individuals that are aching for their loved ones will receive the message they need to hear most; they are loved deeply, they are never truly alone, and they will be reunited with the ones they love most again one day.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am often told A Girl and Her Ghosts is a very “niche” thing. That is something I am proud of. I am honoring individuals through reiki candles presented as beautifully as possible. However, I have expanded upon that recently as I felt I was keeping myself inside a box. So creatively I have grown to include other collections that aren’t inspired by an individual but have been created to heal you in a some other way. My Sweet Dreams candle was the first candle I made that explored something other than a person I knew to be a conduit for healing. It is my most popular candle to date. What makes me most proud though is that I continue to stay true to myself within this business. She is not a cash cow created to make a quick buck. Everything is blessed and intentional and created to serve humanity. I take my time and I never take on more than I can energetically handle because that is not the point of this. A Girl and Her Ghosts was created to be a spiritual yet artistic outlet for healing and to mass produce that or to pour from an empty cup would not result in the same products that I am so proud of. Staying true to myself has not been easy though. There is so much pressure to have this social media presence and to promote yourself 24/7. I’ve tried to exist in that rabbit hole but it felt so exhausting and restrictive for me; so I have chosen instead to pursue local vendor events so that I can reach my community in a more heartfelt and authentic way. I keep my website lightly stocked and my bookings open so that I can reach others across the country; but if I have learned anything, it’s that after healing yourself you want to heal others and the best place to start when wanting to help others is within your immediate community. I have learned many lessons about myself through A Girl and Her Ghosts but I have also been deeply inspired by the beauty of humanity and the energy it takes to make change and healing happen. Every time I meet someone and give them a reading or sell them a candle, I get to hear a bit of their story and it is such a wonderful thing to experience.

If there is one thing I would want the world to know about A Girl and Her Ghosts, it would be that this is a business that was born within a broken heart and has grown roots, branches, and flowers full of love. That love is from all the beautiful individuals that have supported me and my business. Whether you are a friend, family member, or a stranger, the gratitude I have from receiving your support has been so magical and life changing. This support has continued to allow me to create and everything I create is done so in the hopes that it will call in the people that need it most. So if there is something you see that I have made and you are drawn to it or find it beautiful, know that those qualities exist in you and I am so grateful to get to be a space for you to recognize the goodness in yourself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Philadelphia and definitely have my own unique idea of a good time. Laurel Hill Cemetery is my happy place, so I always recommend visiting it. It is a beautiful historic cemetery right next to the Schuylkill River and is full of stunning monuments. I love to walk through the cemetery and will often find a place to sit and meditate or read my tarot cards whenever I visit. I would love to bring a friend there to enjoy the beauty and maybe even pack a lunch to have a little picnic with the ghosts. As for restaurants, Morimotos, Butcher Bar, Estia, and Las Margaritas are my absolute favorites, however nothing compares to a good omelette and home fries from Olympia House Diner. If you are ever thinking about coming to Philly, I would definitely recommend visiting Mutter Museum, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, and Spruce Street Harbor Park for some unique fun.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shoutout The Twisted Monkey Yoga Studio in Jenkintown, PA. This yoga studio has been such a healing space for me and it truly is this magical space to practice in. Daniella Puccini and her team of yoga instructors have really helped me feel safe in my body again after a traumatic labor and delivery with my daughter. Taking classes at that studio has made me feel connected to myself again after a difficult time recovering from labor and postpartum and the community support that I feel walking in the door is unmatched. I am so grateful for them. Gaia’s Creations by Shary is another beautiful soul I would love to shoutout. If you are looking for a healing reiki session in Philadelphia, Shary is the woman to go to. She is truly a medicine woman and I have never received such deep healing than when I was laying on her table receiving reiki and shamanic chanting/drumming. She is a wonderful healer and I am blessed to know her.
I would also like to shoutout Melynda Lopez of Love Melynda. She supported me throughout my entire pregnancy and postpartum journey with The Nurtured Community and has really helped me become a better version of myself. She offers truth and healing and makes you feel safe to be human again. Melynda has really taught me a lot about myself and how to let go of unhealthy expectations. I love everything she does. She is a genuine, authentic, loving soul.
