We had the good fortune of connecting with Cake Monster Cosplay (Savy Sims) and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cake Monster Cosplay, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The word success can mean a lot of things, but to me, success means doing something that brings me happiness. In my case, I find my costuming career to be very successful because cosplay makes me happy. I feel excitement when I work on a costume, thrill while wearing my costume, love for the characters, and passion for the art. Some people think that winning awards in cosplay competitions is how I’ve become successful because it’s help build my audience and built up my portfolio. I don’t find that to be the case. I don’t believe that people are considered successful from the amount of things they accomplished, but from the happiness they received doing the things they love. So the secret to my success is my passion. My passion for creating costumes and love for a character drive me to work hard to bring characters to life. I strive not for perfection, but for realism. My ultimate goal is to complete a costume and have people say, “it looks like it came straight out of the game in real life!” when I get that response, I feel as though I have succeeded! It makes me feel warm inside, and pushes me to get to work on my next project!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a cosplayer, or more professionally known as a costume designer. Cosplay is an art form in which you take a fictional character and dress up as them. Some cosplayers buy their costumes while others make them. I usually make my own! Originally I started out buying my costumes before I started teaching myself how to sew and craft. Now that I’m more comfortable, I make even the smallest of details. When people see the costumes I’ve created, I’ve been told that I “make it look easy,” truth be told it was anything but. When I first started learning how to sewing, I got very frustrated. It was hard, especially because I didn’t have a sewing machine, so I did everything by hand. Sewing by hand is extremely time consuming, and isn’t the strongest of stitches. I learned to be patient, and became more fascinated with costuming. Nowadays, I have multiple sewing machines, and my own little workshop at home! At my workshop, I work on a lot of video game related costumes, and on occasion design my own costumes. I also recently started guesting at conventions and have been judging cosplay competitions. Once cons re-open, I will gladly guest and judge more often.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I don’t tend to leave the house very often, usually I stay at home unless I’m at work. When I do go out, I like to see nature, Aqua Caliente is one of my favorite parks to visit. Being surrounded by trees always puts me at ease! After a long day of walking through the trees, I like to unwind at my favorite restaurant, Hooters. The atmosphere is pleasant and fun, and the wings are superb!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are always people who help us get to where we are, it’s no exception for me. I have many friends and family to thank. Thank you my friends: Sarah and her family, Bethany, Ashley, Angel, Ryann, Alex, and Lulu. I’ve learned a lot from all of them! Thank you Mom, Grandma and Jon. I wouldn’t have a lot of the supplies I needed to get started without their help. And a huge thank you to my biggest supporter, my partner Ryan. He always keeps grounded.
