We had the good fortune of connecting with Camille Boisvert and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Camille, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
In 2018, I started creating and altering clothes for people close to me.

I quickly realized that in the pursuit of making more clothes, faster and cheaper, the fashion industry has become dehumanized.
New styles are produced every day in sizes so “standardized” that they end up fitting no one. Yet I firmly believe that it’s not up to women (or men) to adapt to clothes, but the opposite.

So I decided to create Selfmade Society: clothes that respect the environment, local producers and the women who wear them.

Selfmade Society is a semi-made-to-measure fashion brand. In short, this means that my customers can customize the size of the clothes they order.

What should our readers know about your business?
As an artist and fashion designer, I aspire to make people see themselves at their true value through my creations. I really want women to feel confident in my clothes and that’s what keeps me going everyday. The fashion industry is tough, and to this day, there are still challenges… most weeks to be honest.

But having a clear business/life mission helps me stay motivated and willing to constantly reinvent myself as an entrepreneur. I think that’s the key to not getting discouraged.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Montreal has so many cool restaurants, bars and speakeasies to check out, it’s difficult to only name a few. Tiradito is a great tapas restaurant I would recommend. The Time Out Market is a nice place to hang out and try different food. And Milky Way and Tittle Tattle are fun bars.

I would also suggest anyone visiting Montreal to stop by the Musée des Beaux Art or McCord Museum. Also, the Old Port of Montreal is a must-see, even if it is very touristy.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom, Anne-Marie Boisvert is an artist and has always been a huge inspiration to me. She’s the reason why I was interested in art and fashion and watching her create her business made me want to start mine as well.

I’m also part of a mentorship group, which really helped me grow as an entrepreneur in the last year.
