We had the good fortune of connecting with Casey Wakefield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Casey, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote or affirmation is always evolving. So, for right now, it is from Albert Einstein. He said, “There are two ways to live your life – one is as though nothing is a miracle and the other is as if everything is a miracle.” To me it means we have a choice on how we interpret life. It can be shaped by anger, greed, and bitterness or it can be informed with kindness, love and hope.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I create mainly abstract paintings with mixed media and oil on canvas. When creating my paintings, I am inspired by the essence of the creative process. I like to create compositions of color, some predictable and others unpredictable, with layers of acrylic ink, collage, acrylic paint and finishing with oil paint. Depending on the memory or experience I am creating, I collage paper with patterns, quotes, music sheets, or poems. For me, the joy of painting is to watch the abstract emerge into something that evolves from the process. The canvas becomes a contemplative transformation of colors, drips, and marks. The final goal for the finished product is the painting will create an emotional connection for someone.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my friends visit, they are coming from colder climates. So, we usually start out with a hike or a run outside, since the weather is almost always amazing! Then, a lunch anywhere we can sit outside. Walk around some shops in Old Town Scottsdale or visit our favorite home store, Found, in Chandler. Finally, dinner at a restaurant with great food and drinks! The basic theme is anything outdoors, shop, and eat!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout is dedicated to my mentor Elli Milan of Milan Art Institute. She is a professional artist that has created an amazing program for anyone who has a desire to become an artist. When I first met Elli my experience with art was very limited, although I had always loved art and had an urge to create. I learned through her Art Mastery Program to oil paint and discover my own voice as an artist. Since then I have been painting and selling my work through gallery, commissions, and prints.
