We had the good fortune of connecting with Cesar Mata and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cesar, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think that taking risk is an absolutely necessary part of becoming a business owner and owning a business. In the beginning, taking risks was a bit scary because as a new business owner, I never knew if it would pay off or backfire. As time went on and my business grew, taking risks had become a vital part of my operations in order to grow. To this point, every risk that I have taken has paid off in some way, whether it be with tremendous growth, a lesson, or both.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Having a background in classic car restoration has allowed Matador Powder Coating to bring a detail oriented and colorful aesthetic to the powder coating industry. Whether it be industrial, automotive, or home and garden, we strive for a show quality finish and a top notch customer experience.

Transitioning from classic car restoration to powder coating was definitely a challenge because though they are similar industries, they are very different. I am a very hands on owner and when I decided to open up Matador Powder Coating, I quickly learned how important it is to build a team of the right people and create a culture that encourages individual and collective growth.

I want the world to know that although it’s tough to go out and create something you are passionate about, it is possible and there is no failure in business. And what I mean by that is, any hiccup, mistake, or set back is not the end all be all but a chance to learn, recalibrate, and/or redirect your focus.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To start, I would take them to the great outdoors of Arizona! It’s such an amazing place because there are not many states where you can go from wakeboarding to snowboarding in a matter of hours!

Kayaking down salt river to see the wild horses and the otters
Hiking in Sedona
Snowboarding in Flagstaff
Catching a signature Arizona Sunset

Dinner at Hidden House in Downtown Chandler
Lunch or dinner at The Parlor Pizzeria in Phoenix

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my parents. Being first generation American, I’ve watched my parents work extremely hard to give us a better life than they had. They came to the United States with little to no money and have overcome challenges and built successful careers for themselves. Seeing them work hard through adversity and difficult times taught me that anything is possible with hard work and determination.
