Meet Chad Gerber | Photographer & Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chad Gerber and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chad, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
At times when I worked in a construction office after graduating from university, I felt like the people above me had lost their drive and focus to do anything more than the bare minimum. Being a young, driven kid, all I wanted to do was innovate and try and improve the business I was working for, but would always find myself being blocked or being told “just do it our way” or “the old way works best”. I think I got over people telling me I couldn’t do something, so I decided to be my own boss and release myself from the shackles of that corporate structure. I’ve always been creative, being a musician for over 20 years, but right before I said goodbye to the construction office, I bought a camera and started shooting every day. Eventually my photographs started to get noticed and I realised you could make money as a photographer, so that’s what I set my mind to and haven’t looked back since.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My passion as a photographer and filmmaker lays within travel and seeking adventure. As much as I love big cities and people, venturing out further to walk paths less travelled, or even better, create ones that don’t exist yet, to find incredible places and special scenes I’d only dream of is what drives me.
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come after changing careers after graduating with a bachelor and master’s degree in my previous field. It was definitely one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make in telling my family, friends, and colleagues that I wanted to pursue a creative career, but then again it was the easiest decision because I knew it was who I am.
As for what I’m most excited about, I guess the future that lays ahead in continuing to do what I love. Getting to wake up and be creative every day is a dream come true!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in Western Australia, there are so many places that couple probably make up this itinerary, but funnily enough I just did this exact thing a few weeks ago with a friend who came to visit from overseas. After giving him a tiny tour of Perth city, we ventured south to the Great Southern Region of Western Australia to see places like The Gap and Little Beach in Albany, and Elephant Rocks and Greens Pool in a town called Denmark. After making our way back up, we decided to stop off at another favourite place of mine called Lancelin to experience the pure white sand dunes on offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The photography community and other creative friends around me deserve a shoutout! I wouldn’t be here where I am now without the people that surround me in this industry. It’s been important to have the right people around me, pushing me to keep going when things slow down, and slowing me down to take a look around once in a while and see how far I’ve come. Alongside that, the University of YouTube deserves a little mention too. Without that brilliant slice of free education, there would be a lot of gaps in my knowledge which would have held me back a fair bit without!
