Meet Chantel Schick | Hair extension tech, hair mixologist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chantel Schick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chantel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Not to be dramatic, but Sith Queen Extentions is a business that saved my life. At 26 years old, I made the decision to leave my job in the oil-field. Just when it felt like homelessness was the next option for me, a small business was born. Hi, my name is Chantelle, and this is the story of how I became a business owner.
Everyone knows that spending time in a hair salon fixes a bad day. So I began working in a hair salon. Unfortunately, I was still having bad days. So, I created my own hair salon. From the beginning, the focus of my business has been inclusivity. The beauty industry can be catty and judgmental. At Sith Queen, you will find an environment anyone can walk into and feel comfortable in the skin that they were given. It warms my heart when clients leave my home business saying they feel loved and heard. It has become my passion to inspire others to follow my footsteps.
I want to teach others the skills I have learned while creating my business. I have noticed a strong demand for other businesses like my own. I have single handedly created a training program that will fill this void. My training has helped close to 10 people start their own business, or add services to their existing business. I am excited to take this training program to the next level with Desjardins. Sith Queen has made strong connections in the bodybuilding community and pageant community. However, there are still many communities that we would like to partner with.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is hair, but it’s also so much more than Hair, my business has brought so many women to me and created so many bonds and relationships with beautiful people in this world. It’s allowed me to hear so many different stories and get to know so many different personality types and understand people on a more meaningful level. The biggest part of what I do that sets me apart from other salons and hair extension techs is I keep my environment as relaxed and welcoming as possible. I want women to walk in I just feel at home so they can relax sit and have a coffee and tell me about their day knowing that when they’re going to see me they are excited to tell me about their life and share all the things that’s happened The best part about my day and makes my heart so full is to know they feel so comfortable they are open to sharing personal stories and adventures with me. They know they can trust me and I can trust them and when they leave not only does their hair feel amazing but so do they, I love being able to bring that little bit of joy into peoples lives even if it is only one hour every month. Something else that I find with my business is most people when they get hair installed they feel pain but I am proud to say that I’ve designed some techniques that allows these women to not only feel beautiful but not have to worry feeling uncomfortable, because beauty is not pain, beauty is feeling the best you can in everything that you are and do.
The biggest lessons I’ve had to deal with is finding myself in this business and keeping myself authentic, as well as finding ways to show clients that i wont cause damage to their hair, who will love their hair as much as they do. Hair is a lot more intimate than people give it credit for. Hair creates your look, it Expresses how you feel on the inside and lets You show the world how you truly want to be in that exact moment.
Drowning out the noise of what other salons and hair extension techs are doing and focusing on your own work, clients and giving them the best experience in that moment. So many focus on how people see their work instead of putting their energy into their work and letting it tell the story for you, and the passion you have for your work.
I want people to see my story and my brand, as unique as each of them. I love what i do, I will always give everything I have to create the best experience, quality and moment for each and every one of them. We all deserve to feel like our best possible selves.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh fun!
That one really comes down to the Time of year, right now we are in winter so we aren’t able to access all the best sets.
I would love to start off with a hockey game, us Canadians love our hockey and what better way to kick off a trip.
I would take us to dinner at the Major Tom’s to really take in how beautiful Calgary is from the top of one our largest buildings. Have an amazing dinner then head to the saddle dome. To watch our game!
Next morning we would. Head over to Yellow door for an incredible breakfast. Maybe head over to chinook mall for some shopping. Or the Telus sparks science centre. Every month they do an adult only Night which can be a lot of Fun.
For dinner head over the the porch.
Next day we have to walk around downtown, no matter what Time of year it is it’s absolutely beautiful. Stop off for a coffee at one of the many cute spots on 17th Ae to go get one! 17th Ave we would walk and go into cute shops or get lunch in one of the many options again. That evening we could head over to the Rec Room, for some real fun with all the games!
Depending on how far we would want to go I would take them to the wolf sanctuary about an hour outside of town its an absolutely amazing experience.
Or Banff to. Either take in the beautiful mountain scenes, go skiing,, checkout the local hot springs. So many cute shops to check out too! Literally. Something for everyone. Lake Louise that’s beautiful to hike in the summer and to. Skate on in the winter.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to make extra dedications to my parents, yes of course my parents. Without them always encouraging me to have imagination, passion and a dream I wouldn’t have even had the chance to be inspired the way. I was. Also Mike someone very important in my life who was extremely hard on me but in all the best ways, he pushed me and helped feed my passion to Become a reality.
