We had the good fortune of connecting with Charles Jeans and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charles, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When my wife and I bought our first house, we had a home inspection and the whole thing just felt rushed. The inspector threw a bunch of information at us and didn’t really explain any of it, didn’t take the time to make sure we understood what we where buying, or if he cared. That was why I started Safe House Home Inspectors, our motto or ethos is “make sure your largest investment is a safe investment. Buying a home is the largest investment a lot of us will make. We understand that, and show it in the quality of our work and customer service.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started in the civil construction/oil field industry. I was always into extreme sports, until I was in an accident. I fractured my L4, L5, and S1 vertebrae, every rib on the left side, my nose, and skull. I was told at the time I would not be able to do any of the things I was doing anymore. I’m a bit hard headed so that wasn’t really an option for me! Long story, short I kept pushing my body until I broke the metal hardware they had put in my back. Surgery No.3! I couldn’t continue like I was professionally or other wise to the same intensity I had been. It was a rough time mentally until a family member mentioned I would be perfect for home inspections, that got me thinking about my own previous experience when I bought my house. I fell in love with it, I gained a whole new motivation and energy about my future! I learned then and now that opportunities don’t always look like opportunities until you take action on them. My injury, albeit painful, was the catalyst that changed my life for the better.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Downtown Gilbert baby! My family and I live near downtown and we love it here. I love me some BBQ so Joe’s BBQ is my spot. Itinerary would be early dinner at culinary dropout, pre game at OHSO, drinks and music at whiskey row, end the night at Champs. The next morning brunch at either culinary or OHSO cause I’m gonna need it (not a big drinker anymore). Top Golf would definitely have to happen at some point. Then hang at the house, I’m not necessarily a home body I just like where I live, plenty to do for the kids and everyone else.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It may be cliche, but my wife. With out a doubt. She puts up with me on stressful days, which as a small business owner there are plenty of! When I get down on my self she is there to get me back on track, she has always believed in me. She’s my motivation, I don’t wanna let her down.

If I had a book to recommend “Release your brakes” by James Newman.
